When is an Auto not an Auto?

Answer:

When your blades stop turning((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Just coming into the vertical of a loop, cough the engine dies!! Hit the
throttle hold switch but to my horror the blades just stopped dead, this at
about 250 feet.

There IS an indent in the field the shape of my X-Cell 60's canopy!

You name it, its bent! The only thing to come out of it completely unscathed
is the blades, go figure that one!

Phrase of the day:

Bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil Martin.

Rather than a horizontal loop eh Phil? :-)

Should've lowered the collective before you do ANYTHING else. If you don't,
the blades stop. Once the collective is bottomed, and the baldes are back up
to speed, you can play around with switches for the rest of the "flight",
but not before.

Good job the ground was soft enough to LET it indent. Our pitch was rock
hard today which made getting everything TO the field a piece o' piss, but
it wasn't the kind of lawn to try darting.

Nowt to figure. They rarely get damaged when they're not turning on impact.
I bet your motor survived unbent too :-)

It's a phrase you'll become more familiar with over time:-((

Commiserations anyway.

bugger indeed... maybe the blades were 90deg to the boom when it went in.

my poor shuttle also took some damage after my second and last(!) nose in landing of the day. 1/2in off the deck ready to spool down it tipped sideways & i lost the plot... arse...

Not as bad as a 250ft piledriver but exit blades, 2 threaded rods, mast & spindle (probably).

I cut some nice "zorro" style slots in the field though.

Re: When is an Auto not an Auto?

Bad luck-
I also had an auto today with my Shuttle- fortunately I was over the
landing strip at the time and managed to land on the skids- only a slight
crack on the canopy I was very lucky!

It's something I practice regulary on the sim.

Hmm, it all happened so fast, but I think I did hit the switch before
bottoming the collective. If that's so then yep, that would put a handful of
+ pitch in, BUGGER!

Yep, sheared a couple of the mounting bolts in the frame but having checked
the engine it looks fine)

Time to start costing this not so little list though(

Re: When is an Auto not an Auto?

Phil...
I had to laugh when i saw your post today only because i did a similar thing
on sunday and i also totalled my model . By way of saying laugh i don't mean
that in the horrible manner but the manner that i done the same almost -
whats more i wasn't going to post it because i was totally gutted. But seeing
your post made me respond......
I was doing aerobatic auto's that turned into terminal BRICK freestyle auto
.. I always fly with my blades quite tight in the holders because of inverted
auto's ,anyway today after just rebuilding my raptor 50 i said to the guys
down the field that i wanted to go home with these new bbt blades intact .
This said because the last 3 times out this particular model hasn't lasted
past the 1st flight of the day .
Just hit the throttle hold and settled into a nice descent ,flip inverted
,flipped right side up,flipped inverted and added a bit of pitch to slow the
descent....All the lads were calling for me to speed the rotors up but did
- nope..Then there was this noise ,the blade had tucked under the
horizontal carbon fin and here the heli started its Brick type freestyle
manovuore. It fell from approx 200ft and all we could do was watch..The heli
landed behind the trees and me and the lades went to retrieve it..A baby
deer was standing over the model ,don't know how close he was to it when it
hit the ground....
Never guess what - the blades were intact ! the rest of the model was
cattle trucked........Like yours everything bent ,servo's broke
etc.....Suppose the only saving grace was that mine was a raptor and yours
is and X-cell......

Wonder how many models got smashed due to yesterdays good weather....
Happy rebuilding Phil..
Cheers

Oh SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!

Reminds me of what I did with mine. BUGGER!!!

Here goes: I powered the little fucker up in a quiet area of the
countryside (believe me, with my flying skills I fucking needed it) and I
brought it to a hover. Then for some unknown reason the thing started to
turn slightly to the side and started to spin slowly. This is an odd
problem I have found with this that I cannot seem to fix. I countered
this and brought it back to a stable(ish) hover. I decided to bring the
heli to a higher altitude but remain in hover. In doing so the little
fucker started to wander off and I tried to bring it back but it just
started flying higher and higher and spinning all over the fucking place
totally out of control.

Eventually the bastard crashed a few feet away from me, and once again
(as often happens when I fly) it ended up as a heap in the corner of the
field. It was as bent as a fucking circle!!! I fucking picked it up and
shoved it in the back of the car and went home pissed off that I just
can't seem to get this right. It has since been repaired though.

I didn't know if the heli had a balance problem or whether my skills
truly are pathetic. I don't know anyone who can test it, but it does have
an odd tendancy to spin slowly to one side which makes it difficult to
fly. As the battery runs down, it then turns in the opposite direction
while in hover. I have adjusted the gyro setting countless times but it
still does it. It doesn't have a servo to control the tail rotor - just
the speed of the electric motor.

I wonder if anyone has any ideas how I can get it to stop spinning?

Uhmmm.... what kind of Heli is this ... the only one I know of without a
rudder servo is a Hoverfly and it is a toy...

No crashes but we had a clutch failure (the lining dropped out) and an
engine that refused to play. Thankfully, neither of them were mine and I had
a reasonable flying day. Everything went back home in the same condition it
left.

Bummer on you two though :-(( I hate seeing (or hearing about) good heli's
lawn darting.

Piccolo and Hummingbird don't have a tail rotor servo Robert, just a rear
mounted leccy motor that changes speed according to the demnd sent from the
tx/gyro
