RADIAN Replacement Prop

I have a RADIAN with a broken prop. The weather has been horrible the last 4 days. It finally got real nice today, warmed up into the upper 60's and just a slight breeze from the south

. Got my RAIDAN out, took the boys to the park and just got one motor run up to about 200 feet *when* the canapoy fluttered off and the airframe started buzzing

, so I shut the motor down and made a nice landing, noticing that one blade was broken just beyond the attachment root.

I have looked online, and everyone says they are out of stock (eary April is the best date I can find). Does anyone have any suggestions or an available replacement prop? I'd hate do be down for several weeks, when this is the best weather period coming up (not too hot yet).

Please give me some suggestions on where to look, or if anyone has any available plz let me know.

Thanks Dave (GREAT name BTW). However, they say the part will be available in April. That's a few weeks away. Anyone have one available in March?

Can't you just replace it with a Graupner CAM or Aeronaut folding prop of the same size? (These normally have 8mm blade grip width & 3mm bolt hole)

Quality hardware, these them paddles

That's where I was headed today. I've been trying to find out what types will fit in the hub, and I think the 8mm Graupner cam blades will be a direct fit. Can someone confirm this for me? Also, what size prop is recommended? 9 x 6, 10 x 6, 11 x 6, probably somehwere in this ballpark--I'd like a little info from anyone who has made a swap to these blades. This is my first experience with a folding prop, so any suggestion is welcome.

Just meassure the distance between the two thingies on the prop holding-center-thingie in the spinner, this should be 8mm or 0.31496 inches for you with American meassurement.

The hole for the bolt should accomodate a M3 bolt.

For size, check some reviews or write up's on the Radian online.
Im sure someone has mentioned the stock prop size somewhere?!?

this is too funny...I was just looking into it for you when I found this thread.
There has already been a discussion on the Radian Prop. Apparently we are starting to find out the true fatigue life of the stock props by many people, and I have seen it personally. They all seem to have the same failure mode.

check this link out and read post #26... and there are pics of the setup.
spinners come in white, red ,or black.

I put together the shopping list.....

this is the hot set-up for props....
Aeronaut is an excellent carbon prop and waaay better than the stock prop. So are the Graupners. I will see if I have any.

Go with either 10x7 or 10x8.
Stock is 9.75x7.5.

Aircraft-world in Japan is the place to get these. I don't know how they do it, but shipping is about $2.00 and a couple of days!!!

AN-7242-24 Aluminum Hub 52mm - Neutral Pitch US$12.90
AN-7251-50 Spinner 50mm - WHITE US$5.70 US

The prop choices are:

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for. I think I'll go with the 10 x 7, any reason to pick one over the other? I like the idea of an upgrade to the prop.

I couldn't get the link to work, I'd like to read that other thread. Can you help get it to work, or give me some search criteria to get there?

David, I fixed the link for you....

Here is how the numbers calculate on Steve Neu's calculator on the Castle Creations website....
I input the Park 480 specs as a custom motor and a Kokam 1300 3s battery.

The 10x8 prop shows:

20.36 Amp draw
79.4 efficiency
56.9 mph pitch speed
79.4 efficiency
3:50 full throttle duration
44.3 oz thrust
159 watts output
7517 RPM

The 10x7 prop shows:

18.82 Amp draw
80.4 efficiency
51.1 mph pitch speed
79.4 efficiency
4:08 full throttle duration
40.8 oz thrust
151 watts output
7712 RPM

The stock 9.75x7.5 prop shows:

18.82 Amp draw
80.4 efficiency
51.1 mph pitch speed
79.4 efficiency
4:14 full throttle duration
40.8 oz thrust
148 watts output
7558 RPM

The 10x8 looks to be well with in the comfort zone of the motor and ESC with better performance as long as you use the motor as Parkzone intended---short bursts for climb-out and not as a continuous run at high throttle.
There should be no heat issues with the 10x8.

The 10x7 is the closest replacement for the stock setup with negligible performance difference.

Things do get a little bit ugly when you go much bigger than 11x6....

Your mileage may vary depending on the discharge rate of your battery, but this is good for comparison.

EDIT after flying them all, the 11 x 6 is actually the best rate of climb and overall perfomance.

I used a Graupner 10X8 part number 1329.25.20 and drilled out the pivot holes with a #31 bit to fit the stock PZ pins. Worked fine for the first flight earlier today. Bench tested 240w 22a.

They didn't fold back quite as much as the stock ones. TE of the blade hits the cowl on the right hand side.

I did read on an Australian thread that a second version from Parkzone is coming out, but I have not heard it from anywhere else.

It sounds like you did what was in the pics in my link on post #7 ?

That looks about like it. My first experience with folding props. I just noticed that the Graupner is marked 7000rpm max. Stock motor should exceed that, right?

My first glider experience was in Tucson! Free flight tow line at the UofA Polo field. Mid 1950's
