I am a diehard glow engine user but I would like some suggestions on prop size for 3-blade props. I will be using twin O.S. 55 AX's and have several choices from Master Airscrew for 3-blade props. Looked at some earlier posts in this forum and noticed a picture with a tape measure showing adequate prop clearance from CL of engine to fuselage side but I would be more concerned with the prop clearance to the waterline especially when flying in choppy waters and spray from fuselage chines.

My prop choices are as follows:

11 x 7
11 x 8
12 x 6
12 x 8

I think the 11 x 7 and the 12 x 6 are my two best choices since I think the 8" pitch is too heavy for flying off water and I do not need the heavy 8" pitch for flying. I also think the 11 x 7 or 12 x 6 would be my first choice since it would give me more prop clearance and less load on engines for takeoffs.

I would appreciate your comments.

Doesn't really mater if it's a 12 or 11, water coming off the nose gets sucked into the propellers as indicated in the pictures below. Besides an 11 in. properller is only 1/2" smaller in diameter and the plastic stands up to the water very well.

to minimize the water spray, I increase power very gradually for a slow acceleration. If you go the full power right off the mark, its going to sound like it's sucking in a gallon of water.

I posted a video of the maiden flight of a buddy's CL-415 glow powered model. Presently flying without the motor cowls until he is happy with both engines. So far, he had run 4 tanks thru each and still has them running a bit rich. They are SuperTiger 40s. He is pleased at this time.

Just noticed the problem that marnochs had and i think the solution is to increase by few mm the front end of the splash rails !!
That would help to avoid undesired water spray over the props!!!
The most important part that helps in exactly the same problem in real airplane is the front part of the splash rail.
The belly slides over the water and pushes the water to the front (like the real boat!!). The sides of the belly are pushing the water away.This extra sprayed water stays low because the front part of the splash rail kinda push the excess water again under the sides of the plane.

@ High & Mighty (although very late response!!!!)

The problem that you mentioned about the clearance of the prop
has to do with the size of the waves.
What i mean is that in real life this plane doesn't water land or takeoff if there are higher than 1,5m waves.
So the wave clearance you fly is scaled down as well!!!!.

Sorry guys I haven't flown mine yet. We have been house shopping every weekend and just not enough time lately. However, my new recovery raft will arrive tomorrow so that's one less excuse I have. I still have to make the final CG check, decals, and set the control throws..hopefully in a couple weeks she'll be airborne.

At the moment I am trying to finish up a big WWI plane in time for a June 17th event.

So I took the plunge and got Rudderman's plane.

Its gonna have monster power 46's with turnigy plush 60 amps esc's all powered by 4s 3500 packs.

Looking forward to building and flying this little puppy.

Does having counter-rotating props really help that much?? Normal props are just easier to come by.

Is there an rc float plane about the size of this aircraft that has retracts for it that can be installedI want this model but i want to at Joe Nall 2010 be able to fly with it on the sea plane area AND the main flight line.

Wildcat, MRaerodesign Canadair is not an ARF. It is a very involved, laser cut kit.

Unfortunately both companies are sold out at this point. More are coming, but no one knows when they will arrive. Check the website daily as they will sell out again very quickly.

If you can't wait and simply must have it you can buy a Canadair Cl-215 for $140 more. This model is made by the same company that makes the CL-415 only different marketing. Go here:
