Build Log
Construction has FINISHED on my L-4 (The Maiden + Video!)

So, I ordered all of the parts in NoFlyZone's blog for building the Super Cub from scratch. So far so good, however my wing, tail, and cowl arrived first. The rest will be here Thursday, so until then, the wing!

I added ailerons by using a servo in each side of the wing, however I almost went with one servo and a cable setup. I decided I wanted better response and less slop, so ended up here.

I painted the parts with Krylon Camo Colors (Wal-Mart) and it came out great. The Stars came from a PZ P-51 decal sheet, and the invasion stripes are made with Monocote trim decals.

What do you guys think so far?

Thanks! I can't wait til the fuse gets here. I don't know if I want to cut it up to look like the L-4 with those big windows. I have lexan to make windows, but I don't know how to do it while keeping it's structural integrity.

It will be a true "recon" plane, as in it's going to take up a video camera. I like you mod with the camera out the side. I think i'll go that route.

Just for fun, I'm going to make bomb bay doors to drop ping pong balls full of baby power. That should be fun! (Yes, I know the L-4 never carried bombs, but it did have bazookas lashed on the struts at times )

I've been wanting to do the exact thing to my HZSC, ailerons and olive drab. I can't wait to see your full build and videos to come. Keep up the great work!

So, do you guys have any suggestions on the windows? I can paint the areas black, but that would look... toyish. I want something really nice. I'd like to do the full windows with lexan. Anybody try this yet? Any ideas on how to do it?

Looking wonderful, Woody

Two aileron servos are a good thing for no worries, because cable setups with one servo can bind unless you get everything just right.

I suggest leaving the foam cabin area intact, because SC really needs the structural strength. Maybe guys into scale have hints about how to get window areas to look more like windows, at least from a distance.

Thanks, I have not seen the fuse yet, so I will make that decision when I see it. It's weird building a wing that doesn't have a fuse yet.

Hi Woody,

Is the Krylon Camo a water based paint, or just regular paint? Did you prep the surface in way prior to painting it?

I believe it is water based. It has this "fusion" label on it that says it bonds well with plastics. I sprayed a test piece and everything looked alright. I lightly dust the wing. I let that first coat set, then I applied a few more light coats. It is all a solid OD Green now.

Your idea for the windows was tossed around in the "ultimate SC help thread" some time ago, and I don't think there was any resolution. You'll find, when you get the fuse, that the foam is integral to the structural stability of this particular plane, and the project was never completed. In my view, if you removed the foam for the windows, you would essentially have to build a cage in the fuse to replace what was removed. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it would be one heck of a project. Personally, I don't think too much would be lost if you left the windows black. Then again, perhaps the use of some type of silver mylar or film might help replicate the windows a bit more than what comes with the stock plane. Just a thought. Also, I'm sure the other folks in the thread would like to see what you have done, so be sure to stop there and say hello. It's a great thread with a great bunch of people .
