Stinger 45v2 Progress Thread (Starting to ship! Finally!)

Well, gang, I'm gearing up for the next run of Stinger 45's. The version 2 will use a tapered boom in a new configuration. You won't have to use the time consuming alignment blocks anymore. The new boom will basically just plug on. The riser for the stab. (previousely balsa and ply) will be carbon and molded right onto the boom. It will also have ballast accommodations.

The tail shapes in the new version also get slightly modified.

I'm hoping that the new fuse will be painted in the mold (white, maybe red). I'm still using the wet seam, but the mold will use an inflatable bladder to press the seam. The fuse will be offered in a glass or carbon version.

I'm going to post the construction for all the new molds (fuse, canopy, stab. riser, servo covers) as well as all the production jigs.

On every new model that I do, I like to add one or two personal molding advancements. I've never used bladders before or done a full painted in the mold fuse, so, this will be a learning experience.

I'll also be doing the kit in Full, Builder's, of Short kit variations.

Here is more info on the Stinger 45.

More to come!

Adam

Great news Adam!

I can't wait for my new v2 Stinger,I have pretty much flown my Stinger 45 into the ground...... well I HAVE flown it into the ground bit it's still flying!

The changes you are making should really enhance this great little glider.

I just broke my bandsaw blade.....and no one in Cody, WY sells 82" blades. I can't cut the fuse profiles until the new blades come. Living in a small town has it's moments.

No. I dropped out of the boy scouts after my pine wood derby car was disqualified because they said Dad my built it rather than me. I was a shaping fool at age 13.

I guess I shaped that car without a band saw...I must be getting soft.

Today, I'm making the tooling for the Orangutan instead.

Right now I'm spending 2-3 days a week finishing up the Stingerons and 2-3 days working on new stuff.

Go Adam! I'll be very interested to see how you do the bladder thing. I've heard about it, but never seen any details...

Prepping the Plug Blank

Here is what I have done so far.

I'll be shaping the plug from maple because its hard (not easily over-shaped), tight grained, and stable.

I first printed the top and side fuse profiles from Rhino 4.0. I like to CAD the whole design first. Many designs problems can be remedied in CAD before the actual parts are made. It also makes templates and jigs much easier to produce.

I then calculated the wood stack. The thin center slab thickness is equal to the distance the bottom of the canopy is above the center line (see photos).

All the slabs were milled with a table saw and thickness planer.

The bottom and middle slabs were glued together using 5 minute epoxy.

Once the glue had cured I marked the location of the bottom of the canopy onto the top of the middle slab. I then made another set of lines outside of the canopy lines to mark where the glue should go. These outside lines accommodate for the glue movement when the pieces are glued to together. I then spread epoxy onto the center slab (NO GLUE UNDER CANOPY) and bonded the top slab to the middle/bottom slabs.

No I'm waited for saw blades .

Hey!! I am already sitting here, find your own seat bub!! Sheeeeesh, the nerve of some people. Oh and that's my beer also!!

JUST KIDDING, com'on go ahead and sit down, I'll share, just don't drink my beer.

Adam,
I have been waiting to hear about this. Watching intently. All the new mods sound great. I hope you don't vary too much though with the tail, I really liked the old shape. If the wing had round tips lile the stab, that would be cool.

Now for some enjoyment, (reaching for Popcorn), HEy wait a minute, who the', !&(*#%@&*%, where is my popcorn!!! Hey Fooes, you take my popcorn?!?!?

All right go ahead its just popcorn.
