Bob Herrera Honorary Thread
Fans of the old "Scale Ship Modeler" magazine will remember Bob Herrera, who contributed a number of articles on his wonderful builds in the mid-90's. Three of his covers are shown below.

Bob is happily retired from both his day job and his kit business, "Pandora Models". Pandora produced wonderful Monterey Clipper and Clyde Puffer kits (amongst others?). "Isabelle", above, is from one of these kits. Below is one of his puffers, built by Leon Embry.

Alert
I had the chance last year to get a few pictures of Bob's fleet in his backyard... nothing like seeing them on the water, but hey, I was traveling and on a schedule! A number of these were published in the Jan/Feb 2009 (aka 2008
) Ships in Scale, but here are even more, and in color! The little tug "Alert" was rescued by a retired Crowley skipper from the company's boneyard, and restored for daily use. The tug still does odd jobs around the SF Bay... Bob even had the chance to take her across the Bay one fine day! |

Sabino
Bob spied a model of Mystic Seaport's excursion steamer "Sabino" in another issue of SSM, and decided to build his own version.

Junk
Just last year, Bob completed this junk. Bob doesn't make shiny display models... they're weathered and ooze the grunge of hard working boats.

Alma
Alma is an SF Bay "scow schooner", preserved at the SF National Maritime Park. An article on Bob's "Alma" also appeared in SSM.

Alert and Sabino look way better in person. Bob is an...incredible model maker. I've seen both of these first hand and they are very, very nice models.

How about a little catboat? I'll let the details speak for themselves.

What about his Panama tug? Also an incredible model. Inspired by Mr. Leo Kanstein. (sp)

Felucca
Bob is well known for his Monterey Clippers. Here, he's done the Clippers' forerunner, the Mediterranean "felucca". Drop the sails, add a gas engine, upsize it a bit, and add a cabin to go with the newly extended range, and you have a Clipper.

Panama
Ah, the "Panama". Gas powered tug that operated on SF Bay (seeing a pattern here?), Bob got the plans from the Maritime Park folks. Engine's valve gear is animated...

I have a full size set of the plans for this tug. Got them from Bob years ago. The Panama is a really neat model. Leal's model of the Panama is amazing.

Love the ''Sabino''. I've been aboard her both when she was in Newburyport,Ma and where she is now in Mystic.Ct. She is the last wooden hull coal fired steamer still in active service and is on the National Register as a historic vessel. Mystic Seaport gives rides on her in late spring through early fall.
