What wing area for af 010 prop hanger?

Planning on something like a tiny with 8x700nimh(AAAs) or 3-cell li-poly.

What thrust will the little sucker pump out at 9.6v w/gws A gearing (modified)?

Is vertical possible with this motor?

Should I just build a reinforced tiny (w/rudder )?

010 14 turn, GWS box, 3xlipolys takes my 8 ounce IFO vertical and then some, so anything 8-9 ounces should do the same. 10x4.7 with 4.43 gearing, or 11x4.7 with 5.33 gearing. Calc programs predict 12-13 ounces thrust, and this seems credible. Be advised, this setup is for thrust, not speed. Tres Wright has a Tiny-X with this setup, and likes the 9x7 better, so it depends on whether the plane flies better with some entry speed, or likes to loaf around and 'punch' through maneuvers. Pilot preference is a big factor too.

awesome!

That should work out nicely with my future Christmas present

What kind of cells is tres using? (is there a thread?)

It seems like a 9x7 is a good compromise between thrust and tip speed, and I have many of them

I agree with every single word of Marcus's post Don't you love it when that happens?

If you can hang on a few days, I will have some more flight test info that you may find useful. I am expecting today an 010 with 5.33 box from Aeromicro which will be going on my old Tiny. I am planning on turning the 11x4.7 prop Marcus mentioned with one goal in mind- the ultimate pocket sized hovering/prop-hanging/torque rolling machine! I feel the old Tiny is a better platform for this than the Tiny X because it has a thicker airfoil, larger control surfaces and a rudder.

My X is running the 010 with 4.43 box and a 9x7 as Marcus mentioned. It has killer vertical at full throttle and will torque roll at about 2/3 throttle. It's a very strong setup. 20 minute flights on 3x1020's.

==What thrust will the little sucker pump out at 9.6v w/gws A gearing (modified)? ==

I wouldn't do the 'A' gearing because you have to turn a smaller (7" or 8") prop and my tests on a 16t 010 with 2.80 indicate the 010 is very inefficient with that setup.

==Is vertical possible with this motor? ==

Yes Keep your plane to around 8 ounces AUW and you'll be very pleased!

==Should I just build a reinforced tiny ==

No need for reinforcing. The old Tiny and the X both are quite sturdy as-is.

I'm using 3x1020 Kokams with these 010 motors. Here's a thread about it:

Tiny X with Astroflight 010

Fun stuff!

Ok thanks!

Now I'm off to get some cells!

Ok I have my Tiny built. I enlarged the surfaces somewhat (a little too mutch on the elevator but o whell) Covered with saran wrap it came out right at 7.3 oz with 8x700nimh.

I'll post a pic of it tomorrow, right now i just have the ips on it as i want to see the difference in performance between an ips A and an af 010. (yes of course vertical)

If you're going to hang on the prop, you are a helicopter and you don't need any wing at all.

good point!

Although, sometimes a wing and tail are good to have for a smidge of control

Here is a pic of the plane sans wheels.

It flies!

Flew for 10+ minutes of constant airobatics on maiden even inverted!

This was also in a 10 mph wind gusting to 15

A new look!

Upgraded the covering to Monocote (yeah a little heavy but tough enough for my style of flying)

It will fly in my coldesac (sp?) fairly easily with those 10mph winds blowing, but the dogs just go crazy!

I also smashed a gws gearbox but was able to replace it with parts that I had.

And no the tail is not as crooked as it appears in the photo.

woohoo! I got the af 010 14T for Xmas!

but now Aeromicro is out of stock of gearboxes

I guess i'll just have to start hacking into one of my old ips gears!
(What gear ratio is a dx-a?)
This thing really screams on 8 cells DD 5.5x4 prop!
