MIA 2014 Quicksilver Style ultralight frame kit

I have always loved flying ultralights and in the end of the 70's and beginning of the 80's there were many of them and the most popular one was the Quicksilver.
I have owned and flown both a one-seater and a two-seater and they were very fun airplanes to fly and you got the wind (and bugs ...) in your face, very much like riding a motorcycle.

For a long time I have wanted to build a RC model of the Quicksilver and finally - here is a a brand new kit from micro-flight.com!

The guys at micro-flight has had a semi-scale version of the Quick but with a tractor motor and that was not really what I was looking for so the new scale looking version is much better.

Please note that it is not neccessary to do any modifications at all - it is a very nice kit as it is original!

In this thread I will go through the steps of the build and also report how it flies.
Enjoy!

Must say that the parts exceeds my expectations so far!

The blue alu parts are anodised in the correct Quicksilver blue color so it is more to it than you first think.

Here's a link to the real Quicksilver ultralight airplanes:

Made some more progress today and now it looks more and more like a real Quicksilver.
The pilot is from an old Schluter Heli-Baby from the 70's and I am not sure I'm gonna use it. A bit heavy at 110 grams and also not the right scale, too small.

Micro-flight has a new one called Super Lightweight MIA 1.25 Pilot Figure at 67 gram and 330mm long, animatronic head (with servos) and flexible arms , legs and hands. I think this would be appropriate regarding to weight and size.

I just wish I could replace the head inside the helmet with a FPV camera or a 808 #16 .......

Here it is on Youtube in an ultralight trike:

I just had to......

The real Quick has cadmium plated screws, washers and nyloc nuts in a yellow/golden color and I found alu fasteners in the same color so I changed all screws etc to make it look more realistic.

BTW, the kit fasteners are great and clever using 1/8" metal screws and nuts on the forward part of the frame and black plastic screws 1/8" on the aft part, necessary as it is a pusher and to avoid problem with CG.

Thanks,
maybe I am being a bit too much into details but for me it has became more of a scale project than I anticipated. I have to blame Maurio at micro-flight for the nice blue alu tubes and how well they fit together making it very scale like.

I will try to use a couple of different wings and maybe a scale wing also with alu tubes and sewn covering but I will start with the HK Slowstick wing parts.
I bought 2 wing sets and have cut them up like in the picture to get a scale 155cm wingspan.

I also cut off the outer most part of the trailing edge from the wings as I will use my own 6mm depron ailerons.

To better accomodate the long Slowstick wing I made a new Root Tube out of 10x10mm square alu tube. The one that came with the kit is a bit more sturdy being about 13x13mm U-channel but original Slowstick parts doesn't fit on this one as it is too large. Also, the 10x10 tube is more scale like.

I already have some parts from www.flyerc.com and they have very sturdy plastic parts for Slowstick, much better than GWS. I am using their Front Wing Mount, Rear Wing Mount and Outrunner Motor Mount, which I have inverted to have a hanging motor. Now I can use a 10" prop instead of 9".

Did some more work today on the wing.

I managed to loosen up the CF tubes inside the wings as they will be replaced by full lenght CF tubes, same size 8x6mm. I dont think the angled wooden part that connects the two wing parts on a standard SS wing is enough so I fabricated two 4x6x80mm CF tubes that will go into the CF wing tubes and also a pianowire 4x160mm that is bent to the same size as the wooden part.

To add to this will 4x wing struts made of 3mm CF.

Today I peeled off the decals from the HK Slowstick wings, a real PITA .....
And it left a less than desirable surface ..... wouldnt do it again.
Nedd some filler and sanding.

Also I glued 2pc of 1x4mm CF to the trailing edges to stiffen up things a bit.
