Sidewinder Build

I've had this kit for a while now. I finally found a ASD drive plus have some time to get started. It is a logging Sidewinder from Gary King in BC. This is my second kit I've built of Gary's. The hull's are really stout and can really take a hard bump, The hull, Deck, and superstructure will require quite a bit of trimming and sanding for a good fit.

Propulsion system

Here is the propulsion system I am using. Its a 40mm prop ASD from Cornwall Model Boats, A 3536/8 1000KV brushless motor, 50A speed control, HS-5645 digital servo with a 60 tooth gear to turn the schottel drive. The 6V SLA batteries I wanted to use will not fit so I have some of the 1.2 amp hour versions on order.

You may find you need a high torque metal gear servo to overcome the
rotation and friction of the drive gears. I had a hard time keeping my
tug strait for the first few years, and finally figured out that at full speed, the
servo couldn't hold the drive "true".

Lower speeds were not an issue, just full power.

Thanks for the tip Aimee. It is a high torque metal gear digital servo.

I found out that the HS-5XXX series digital servos can program the endpoints for 180 degree travel and they will move that far on the programmer, However. when connected to the radio system I will only get 90 Degrees of travel. The 5XXX series only has a High Resolution mode so you get very fine movement for the 90 degrees but no low resolution to get 180 degrees travel.

The 7XXX series has both High and Low resolution. I picked up HS-7985 which is another high torque metal gear servo with both High and Low resolution. I can now get 180 travel on the servo which gives me 360 travel on the ASD.
