The World Models Hall Cherokee II

The January '14 issue of RC Sport Flyer has an ad for a new (to me) 1/4 scale Hall Cherokee II by The World Models. Is this new? I went to the websites listed and there is no info as of yet. Pricing is $500 and the ad says it is based on Dave Smith's design. If it follows his design closely and is constructed well, this should be a winner!!

Asher, I saw that ad as well. Nice price for a nice sailplane. Now if they get a 3rd scale, I'll get one.

I think it's great that all these "entry point" scale models are out there but I prefer 1/3 scale as well. As evidenced by the 6 meter Ka-8, it seems there are a few structural issues on the larger offerings but 1/3 should be an easy stretch for the lightly loaded examples that are prevalent from the Asian producers.
Still, I may have to look harder at one of these Cherokees; it's a pretty scheme and a real floater based on Dave's rendition.
BTW, thanks for the reports from the AMA Convention.

Hall cherokee

You could always buy the short kit from www.scalesailplanekits.com, at 1/3 scale and build it yourself!

I think this may be an ideal "go-to" model for those guys on a budget who are looking to get into aerotow, but don't want to build a wood kit. I'm always looking for something to steer guys into when they ask this question.

I'm hoping it will be a better quality ARF than the WM Minimoa, which is adequate (I owned one), but by no means perfect.

Don,
Thanks for posting the ad. I had a request to do so into Wil but haven't heard anything back from him so you beat me to it.
I agree it should be a good entry level but also one for those of us who just want to "float" on occasion. Looks like a nice model, lets hope it approaches expectations.

Asher,

Dunno if I breached any protocols by attaching a full-page scan. Fixed it now!

I think they picked a good color scheme, and the canopy looks nice. This is such an improvement on the Minimoa, with its hackneyed HB-282 scheme and a non-scale canopy and tray. AND, this one is wood, which right there is a big improvement on the painted polyester resin fuse on the 'Moa. Dunno how well that Toughlon covering will hold up with time, but wouldn't it be fun to strip and refurb one of these with fabric and paint, after a few hardworking seasons (I'm such a benchwork junkie...!).

I can't wait to see one of these in the flesh. Hoping for good things!

Don.

Hall Cherokee Quality

We've gotten a sample of the Hall Cherokee. The quality, in my opinion, is excellent. moreover, you can use standard servos in it, which should keep the cost down! Fai tells me the model will be shipping sometime in late January.

I assembled the Cherokee for Wil and Yes it has spoilers. A servo in each wing drives a front hinged spoiler.

Just got an email from Fai. They should have the Hall Cherokee II on their website next week. Pricing is $499.00. They estimated the shipping cost to Tennessee at $60.00. I'm definitely in.

Question for you guys. I've never towed a glider. Used Hi-Start back in the early days and all have had motors with folding props since electric motors became popular. Can you recommend a tow release for the Cherokee. Also, if you could give me some guidelines on what to use for a tow line (monofilament line?) and what would be an appropriate length from the tug to the glider. One more thing, should the tow plane also have a release to shed the line before landing? Do you put a highly visible parachute or cloth on the end so you can locate the tow line? Any fishing swivels to keep it from twisting??? I'm a total newbie at aerotow, but have been flying sailplanes, pattern, warbirds, etc. for 40 years. Any help on towing would be greatly appreciated.

SZD16, thanks so much for the link. I would have done a dozen things wrong without reading that first. Wealth of info. Anxious to give it a go. Thanks again.
