Here comes the LEGEND

Well, since ISRDAN blew the veil of secrecy on this project I might as well show you what I've been up to in the Black-Ops area in the Cave of Wonders. I thought it was time to do something a little different. So I searched the web for decent looking civilian planes and found the Turbine Legend. It's pretty cool looking ship with a decent wing and tail planform. Plus there are actually some decent looking scale paint schemes if you care to go scale. The real plane, being a kit plane is out there in many variations. There are some with P-51style scoops, some without, tail strakes, or not, etc...etc. I chose to do the fuse without the scoop or tail strake. I know this one will fly better.

I also decided to go a little smaller with this one. The wing area is just over 1 sq/ft so the wing loadings will be fairly high even if it's built on the light side. Prototype #1 is just a tick over 30 ounces which gives it a wing loading of about 25oz sq/ft. Sounds heavy but actually lighter than I was expecting.

My plan is to build 2 prototypes to test a couple of different wings. there's only minor differences in the two so I don't expect there to be much difference in performance. But for me it's important, as I am super picky about how my planes fly.

Specs: (std fuse, Balsa sheeted wings, with Basswood LE and 3.5oz glass)
Span 38" (6" root, 3.25" tip)
wing area 1.22 Sq/ft
Flying weight 30oz
Wing loading 25oz/sqft

Once I get it dialed in and get the plans done I will set up a group build for those that are interested.

Nice project Brian. The prototypes look real good. Cool and unusual plane to model. Good luck with the test flights. Did you use an RG14 wingsection?

Beautiful Legend Brian!
Great subject for PSS. I would love to see what you would do with the Lancair Evolution. It has great proportion for the slope with its' high aspect ratio wing and curvaseous fuse.

Very nice! I'm in for one, once final production is on line. I like the idea of smaller wing area with lighter ships to increase the wing loading. This should really be a fun ship to fly.

Fred, after I got it build I almost wish I had made it bigger too. I didn't think I would like it as much as I do. But there are plenty of bigger ships already out there.

Hopefully there will be some decent wind soon. This time of the year is pretty much deadsville unless a good Santa Ana is blowing. And Santa Ana winds are not really ideal for dialing in new planes. They tend to be too strong and the air is usually pretty bumpy.

And YES, I do think that Lancair is butt-ugly!

All I know is my Zephyr is a smidgen bigger than that and it tends to dissappear on me from time to time. Brighter colors might help though so I'll just make sure I pick out a color that pops at a distance.

Totally agree on the Lancair. Never have liked the looks of that one.
