RFD900s used in 2012 Outback Challenge

Hi All,

Out of the six teams who made it to the last stages of the UAV outback challenge 2012, three were using RFD900s for telemetry links! It was great to go to the competition and see the different airframes.

CompassUAV, Canberra UAV, and TGIF

TGIF (I am a member of) - was scrubbed due to a crash the day before the competition

Compass UAV made it through ground and flight scrutineering, but had autopilot problems through the flight.

Canberra UAV made it through, found joe!, and returned to the airfield!

Great flying teams

Tough luck on the crash, mate. How did the RFD900's do in real life?

The modems worked a treat - Having a look with Tridge from CUAV the night before, it was decided to go back to one antenna because the other antenna was coupling noise from the electronics quite strongly - there wasn't enough time to relocate the second antenna to a better location. During the search pattern, the modems dropped link once for a few seconds and promptly reacquired link. I suspect it was during a turn with shielding from the airframe. 2 antennas would have probably alleviated it. Overall they worked really well!, will have a look through the logs with Tridge at some stage when he's back at home. The Compass UAV Guys had done testing with a dual polarised Yagi to get the best range. From discussions, they were very happy with the modems, achieving better performance than Digi900 Xtend's.

Hi Seppo,

I have a RFD900 kit, that receives this week with many parts that have bought. Modem is nice, small, light and rock solid building, congratulation!

But to my first run, need know about FTDI USB/connector, how I would connect it in GS modem? Black/GND in connector with Pin 1 in RFD900 modem?

Mine was jumper in 4 and 6 modem pin, for USB supply, right?

Thanks!

Hello!,
You have it correct!, Pin1 of USB cable GND (black), connects to Pin 1 (GND) of the RFD900.
With the jumper in place on pins 4,6 it will connect USB power to the modem.
Cheers, Seppo

Hello,
The units are addressable at the moment with the NetID parameter, but, don't support multipoint communications within the same network.
Multipoint comms is something that we are looking into in the background, but don't have a firm time on at the moment.
We have been working on getting the first RCLink boards (RFD900/LRS) out for manufacture in the coming week.
Cheers,
Seppo

Rs-485

Can a RS-485 connection be made to allow for PTZ camera gimbal control?

Also, I am interested in the reason RP-SMA was chosen for this modem, assuming it was more than arbitrary.

Hello Parri - Yes, The TTL level serial can be sent through a 232-485 converter to controller to drive a camera, I have done some experimenting with this before OK.

Stilp, Yes, the connector choice is due to FCC requirements to have a "unique" style of antenna connector to discourage end users changing antennas for FCC15.247 radios. It is planned to get the RFD900s FCC certified in future so figured to get the connector style correct from the beginning

I'm desperate for news too! But I know these things take time...
Seppo. I understand the connector decision now.
I'm looking at slip rings for my Antenna Tracker. I plan on putting the RCLink with my RFD900 behind my double BiQuad and am requesting advice on how many contacts should be reserved for this purpose. Cheers.
