Asked before but - Heli motors in EDF's

There are plenty of motors around for general use, but in EDF's they tend to be grouped as 2xxx, 3xxx and 4xxx kv - with specialist above that. The choice for average modeller is limited compared to general prop world.

In the quest for performance but within budget ... I looked at Heli motors ... most 450 motors being in the 3500+ kv and some like one I have is 4400kv ... They are size suitable to bolt into a 70mm EDF .. in some cases a 64 ...

Having run such on props for Neeed for Speed pusher - I know they can draw huge amps when put to the limit ... my 4400 on 4S and 5x5 prop hit over 80A and still climbing when I shut it down.

Has anyone tried or run a Heli motor in EDF unit ? And if so what was results ?

I have on bench ... 3700kv Westor and 4400kv Turnigy 450 motors spare ..

??

Consider the Kv as the cubic inches and the motor size either a big block or small block. The prop is the gearing, your 4400 turning a 5x5 is probably a 28mm motor if not a 24mm?You might try a 4.1x4.1 get the rpm to go fast and reduce the amps by almost half. A 28mm in runner is not the same as a 28mm out runner, for out runner motors go by the stator size not the can size. Ultimately it depends on the fan you get then the guys here can recommend what type of motor you may need for the use you have planned. There are combinations that will just barely sustain flight and there are combos that send the jet ballisticly. Its your poison, choose with your eyes open.

I already am an accomplished and knowledgeable EDF maniac .... 50mm (2), 64mm (1), 70mm (2) ....

I'm just curious if anyone has experimented with Heli motors ... and yes they are 28mm usually in 450 class helis.

As to my pushers ... I currently hold the speed of 222kph using the heli motor with 5x5 ... my interest is speed records with those.... not run time and have loads of archived R&D info about it ...

Been using helicopter motors in EDFs for a bit over a year now. While they don't put out like a true EDF motor does, they are certainly useable to the task. For example, that 4400kv outrunner heli motor you have is likely rated around 550 watts and is probably 28mm in dia. and around 40 - 42mm in length. Comparing to the ARC 28-48-1, the ARC is similar in size and rated wattage, but that's where it ends - the ARC will take waaaay beyond 550 watts and stay alive, at power levels the outrunner will wind up as smoking hot molten metal.

For the less-demanding apps, heli motors are great, especially when considering their cost. Just don't expect them to perform at levels comparable to true EDF motors.
