Yes, I've had a Graupner mx-16 with 35MHz and FrSky 2.4GHz in and software-switchable at one point

But it was less "generic", yes Graupner, MPX and Jeti for example did offer "DIY" modules but you had to open the radio and do the installation, and it's kind of a European speciality... you never found that for Futaba or Spektrum for example.
Pretty much everybody had a JR cased module though, and it's plug and play for anybody

There are several DIY modules available that can be installed in Futaba. Not sure about Spektrum.

I meant a DIY Futaba module that can be installed in other radios that don't have a module slot.

Yep, but they unfortunately never made one, which was the point
They however have (or had, discontinued but they can be found 2nd hand) a JR module, hence the coolness of the new radios that come with module slots
