Help!
Lighting for Quad

Hi, I have a 450mm quad that I already have strips of leds on to aid in orientation in day and night flying. At night I still have a hard time with orientation and am considering adding a single white led up front to illuminate the front orientation ball. Any advice on which product to get? I am fine with soldering and wiring.

Thanks for the help!

I order mine from the "Super Bright" LEDs... http://www.superbrightleds.com/

But if you have a local Radio Shack, they have a white 5mm LED which is 4500mcd I think - it's wicked bright... see photo...

thanks for that! There is a Radio Shack very nearby -I wouldn't think to look for anything like that there though!

Some stores have it but some stores in malls are basically just phone stores and don't have components any more. Call first and ask if they have components. If they do, they should have 3 full drawers of LEDs, and they should be in stock. Be careful when you're looking at them - get the ones that say "5mm - High Brightness" (sorry I should have looked at the bag before I posted before - I was wrong about the brightness too... it says 7000mcd!)

Nice... the LEDs are in a blue-label drawer. The "mondo resistor pack" with like 500 resistors in it was hanging on a hook - you only need to buy that once

I'm at the shack now and completely lost as to which resistors to get. Been a while since I studied my electronics for my ham radio license in th 70's!
Found the bulbs - rated 3.3v. Will be attaching to 12v source. Can you point me in a direction?

There is a big pack of 1/4 watt resistors... if you're going to do this a lot, then just get the monster pack. My calculation says you need a 435-ohm resistor for that - if all your LEDs are the same voltage (unlikely) then you could just get a big pack of whatever is the next size bigger than 435.

Using 12V won't be very efficient for the mQX where each LED needs to be on its own wire, for placement purposes. But running higher voltages lets you put 2 or 3 LEDs on each wire.

Its for my 450 quad running 3S - I already have LED strips on the arms but want to try a brite white headlamp to illuminate the orientation ball at night
