It actually took some effort to make it so tatty.

Both motors were second-hand and replacements could be found on ebey.

Connecting steppers to Picaxe is particularly easy, the unipolar has the motor common positive to the PSU positive and the coil wires taken to the collector of the TIP121s.
I used the Picaxe 1.44 8pin project board CHI040 hacked to accept the TIP121s, there are holes to accept 0.2 screw down terminals.

The bipolar was on a hacked 2 Phase 2A speed adj. memory L298N board from ebay for 10.25 at present. I swapped the controller for a Picaxe 18M2, the memory chip for a sm 5v regulator, wired in the enable pins and a 10k pot for PWM.

Searching for a compass I found anther CNC Picaxe and thought that others may be interested.

I copied this address into Google which offered to translate it.
A Proxxon milling machine running first on dismantled servos and then on steppers.
