Wicked Powered Banana Hobby Jpower 50mm AMX

Just received my 50 mm Jpower AMX from Banana Hobby, they sellit under the Blitz RC brand on their website. First appearances is that these are nice littel EDF models and I pleased with the quality of the foam and painting on the AMX. The stock power system comes with a 50 mm EDF fan unit (5 blade) and a 20 amp ESC. I am going to do a few tests on the stock power system then my plan is to install a Wicked EDF motor with a WemoTec Micro Fan to speed this baby up. I would like to get it into the 90 mph range which should not be an issue. I will post photos in a litle bit.

Here is a link to the BH website for the model I bought:

A few more photos.

The Wemo micro fan sweep are:
D=49.8mm
d= 26.8 mm

Deq= (49.8^2-26.8^2)^.5 = 41.97mm
80% FSA diameter = 41.97 * .8^.5 = 37.54mm

Measured exit diameter = 39.4mm
So exit is (39.4/41.97)^2= 88% FSA which is a good value for most power settings. If you want to go for more speed instead of thrust then 80% is a good mix of thrust and speed

Sounds like a "nip and tuck" is in order for more speed.

Cool conversion Don! How do the weights of the power systems differ? Looks like your going to get some serious performance boost. I wouldn't be surprised if you got a 100mph out of this setup!

I suspect the version I got (the F-86) won't be as aerodynamically slippery as the AMX but more power is always better!!

Speed Measurement

Don,

How are you going to measure speed? I would thing a radar gun would have some difficulty getting a decent return from this small aircraft.

awesome -- i'm curious to on the stock power system overall weight. Or at least the weight of the stock motor.

That is going to COOK out at 5400kv --- how much battery are you gonna have to give that??

It will top 100mph EASY i'm sure w/enough lipo. My WEMO Micro just arrived today -- don't even have the jet yet -- or the motor i picked either. I went with 5000kv -- 55grams Exceed EDF motor (26mm can) - for the money you can't go wrong -- peaks 400watts so a good match i hope for the Micro fan. I'm worried Rhino 40C 1050 is going to be barely enough. You're gonna need 1500mah 40C probably...

Can't wait to see this fly - keep at it!!!

Sorry I have not replied sooner, been gone all day, went to see Monster Jam with my son and my dad. Nothing like monster trucks and loud engines

The stock motor and fan weigh 2.1 ounces
The Wicked Wemo 50mm combo is 2.9 ounces

With ESC added:
stock with stock ESC: 3.1 ounces
Wicked Wemo/ Pentium 40: 4.4 ounces.

Stock lipo: 2.6 onces
3S2100 30C: 6.7 ounces.

I am going to get some amps watts on this setup. But the fuselage will hold a 3S2100 just fine and all parts on the scale was just under 16 ounces which I think is reasonable as this higher power is not intended for newbies anyhow so I am not worried about the higher wing loading. I think a 3S 1500-1800 size may be the best setup but I need to research packs a little more as some of these 1800 weight only 1 ounce less than a 2200 so might as well go 2200.

I will post more as I go.

If this works out well then I will be carrying the Wemotec 50mm fan, as long as the fan is reasonable to balance then I can offer balanced ones.

Did a runup on the Wicked Wemo combo and the numbers are not what I expected. I was hoping for more but what I got was 310 watts on startup then settled to 280 watts and 24 amps. This means a 3S1300 20C will be plenty and I can use a 30 amp ESC. So that will drop the weight of the lipo and ESC about 3 ounces so I will be about 13 oz at 280 watts which is 344 watt/pound which sounds like a good number. I think I am going to test the Wicked 4000 on 4S and the 4800 on 4S just to see what I get. Maybe a 4S 1300 lipo will be a baby rocket.

Don

Just tested a 4S setup with the Wicked 4000 and got 325 watts at 22 amps so a 4S 1000 30C is also an option.

Don those numbers are a surprise --- i thought the WEMO Micro has been tested to 650 watts (extreme case as i understand), but 400watts should be in the picture.

What do you think is holding back in the setup, lipo or motor? or fan? - on 3s 40C 1050mah.

I was hoping to run near 350 watts peak with a 5000kv Exceed EDF motor in the Micro fan. I've got a couple 4s 30C 1600's that weigh 167grams each -- but on the 5000kv that is likely WAY to hot on the motor.

Did you measure watts with same lipo on stock power system?

Oh yes how was the balance on the WEMO fan out of the package? decent?
