Warning for those considering the MotionRC 90mm FA-18!

Thrust Vector off = No takeoff until you cut throttle = Multiple pieces of FA-18

Looks great however the thrust vectoring setup is a crap shoot. Had everything setup per the Chinese directions. However after the crash I realized that the thrust vector setup was not correct. Too late however... The thrust was directed slightly downward which forces the nose down.

Here's what happened:

First time out this afternoon. Took off full bore, pull full up elevator and the nose stayed glued to the runway. Throttle full back, plane lifted up off the runway about 6 feet, reapplied throttle and FA-18 slammed into the runway. Now I know why the guy in the video took off with the thrust vectors turned on. Plane is now in garbage bag minus the fan and electronic parts.

Thanks a lot for not sharing that tidbit of info about doing the first flight with thrust vectors turned on. Had the elevator thrust vectoring been turned on I could have trimmed it after takeoff and it would still be in one piece!

Thanks for the heads up on the F-18 TV. Although you are talking about an EDF let's keep the discussion here about the event itself.

Sounds like pilot error and not setting up the plane right. I have seen many of those jets fly with no problem

So now do I cut and paste my previous replies since you deleted them? I did say that even though tis was your set up problem that it, and some other issues I brought up, should be posted here so people are aware of them.

Since you are just going to delete my posts I just say it's your set up problem and not a Motion or FreeWing issue.

I would be inclined to think setup error as well. Mine flies great and i have the thrust vectoring permanently disabled on mine.

Bill, is that a V2 with flaps and the stock power set up? You said disabled, all of it or do you have yaw (rudder) still on?

That is the V2 with flaps and just as it came out of the box Evan.

Edit: That might have been a little misleading as far as "as it came out of the box". I epoxied my TV nozzles into a fixed position and had to do some minor shipping damage repair. It is the stock power system though. Full mini build thread in my blog http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2227469

+1

Misaligned exit nozzle affects all EDFs. I built a Phase 3 EF16 that would pitch down with throttle due to the same issue. It was a handful to fly... no throttle = balloon into air.

I own the Freewing F18 from MotionRC and think it's a great flying jet. A pussycat.

This is probably the easiest "scale" jet to fly IMHO. Its my go-to jet.
