I have ready many other threads on here and can't find an answer.

I am looking to get more power for my $60 wild hawk and I don't want to spend more than the plane cost. I'm not really sure how. Do I need a Brushless motor and ESC or is there a more powerful motor that I can buy and just swap out for the original?

Just figure out what your motor weighs and how much thrust it puts out, then buy something not much heavier, but more powerful.
Maybe something to run on 3 or 4 cells, but with your size prop.

Yep i'd agree with Butch777 and say your best bet is with Hobbyking.com and if you do a google search you might even find the right HK motor to fit it because i bet there is a few out there that have used there motors for the Wild Hawk.

If not find out what size motor you have and go over to Hk and find a close match for it,when you think you have the motor you want check out the comments under the motor you like and see if anyone else has used that motor on your WH and see what they say about it.
Thats what i use to do for my warbirds and it worked out well.

The Exceed Wildhawk /Super Lightning come with a brushed 480 motor, which is a 28mm motor can. If you want a direct replacement for the stock motor, you need a 28mm inrunner brushless motor and a 30A brushless ESC. Also, you need to decide how many cells Lipo you want to run, either 2S or 3S. If you want to run 2S, best KV motor is between 2700-2800 kv, whereas, if you want to use 3S packs, you want a motor between 1900-2200kv. I run all my EZ style planes on 2S 2200mah and they have ample power for brisk climbouts and aerobatics, for good power-off soaring performance, as these types of planes are gliders after all. Assuming you are in the US. Here is a good US source for a 28mm 2700kv inrunner for 2S use:

You will also need a 3.17mm adapter, and APC 6x4E prop for this setup.

I'll second that. Recently got a 1100 watt setup for an 8 pound plane from him..flies great and got it for really cheap compared to other places.
