From FPV ASW-28 to FPV Gracia- FPV Glider build log (images + videos)

After HammerHead came the gliders...
(Shark's Build Log here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1843300)

After FY31AP + Hornet came APM 2.8 + MinimOSD...

In this thread I will keep an online archive of my efforts to setup an APM 2.8 to my foamy 2.5m Lanyu ASW-28 and then (if all goes well...) my transition to a 3m Top Model Gracia (http://www.topmodelcz.cz/index.php?&...detail&id=6054)

My intention is not to do any kind of long distance flights, but to glide, thermal and get footage of beautiful locations

ASW-28 started as a LOS platform.
But after flying it, I immediately started liking the way it was thermalling.
It was fast and stable.

So for starters I installed a spare 5.8Ghz FPV kit and my old FrSky receiver.
No AP was installed, just my old Remzibi OSD.

Flight after flight I was captured by this foamy's manners.
The next step was to install my 1.3Ghz VTx and an EzUHF Lite 8Ch receiver.
To complete the set, I hang my Hammer and used its heart (an FY31AP) to give life to my ASW-28.

ASW-28 kept flying FPV sorties without incidents.

All of the electronics that I had, for testing purposes, installed on its back, found their places inside its plastic fuse.

The motor was upgraded with a slower Lindiger one and my 10'' folder was replaced with a 15'' Graupner.
The main 3S lipo was replaced with an A-Spec 2S for AUW reasons.

As an experiment I soldered a LiOn pack using 3200mAh 18650 packs to get a 12.800mAh motor pack which flew great for over an hour.

Flight after flight the ASW-28, with its huge spacious fuse, proved its FPV nature.
"Between", (FPV night flying and cloud surfing with a Lanyu ASW-28) (3 min 30 sec)

The description and many images of the night flight can be found here:

I tried a simple panning mechanism, but was replaced with a headtracker after a while.
(more about the ServoCity pan&tilt system combined with my new Dominators V2 goggles later...)

Time to evolve.

Time for APM!

After 3 days of reading and netsearching I felt ready to talk to my friend from China.
A few days later an APM 2.8 was on my workbench.
Yes, yes, I know, there is no 2.8 version of APM.
After Google translating some Chinese sites, I got my info:
-dedicated MinimOSD port.
-new power supply.
- jumpered mag compass inside.

After flying the APM and autotuning it,
I was impressed by its level of control over the airspeed, even without a pressure sensor.
Loitering, FBW-A and FBW-B were a charm to experience.
Ok now we are talking for FPV sightseeing!
With all these weapons in hand, you can really feel relaxed and enjoy the view!

RTH was tested and bulletproofed (RCTx OFF test- Passed).

The only drawback was the minimOSD...
If you look at MinimOSD's layout after you watch a RVOSD video, you feel like you were given a fat wife to live with.

Something had to be done, so I uploaded to minim the small character set and the party was saved!
At least this is a screen you can look at.

One of the things I always wanted with FY31AP, and I couldn't have, is EzUHF RSSI indication.

So I decided to implemented it on MinimOSD.

Ok, the 2 nights that followed were a disgrace of my mental level!

Firmware after firmware, APM setting after setting, RCRx programming after programming, I was guided to believe that I am to stupid too fly a plane!

With luck, I found the way to get Ezuhf Link Quality indication to multiplex into my PPM stream and output it on the screen!

Success!!!

I forgot to mention, that one of the big benefits you get for buying an APM, is PPM luxury. I am now using a 12 Channel setup using my cheapo 9x which is running OpenTx firmware.
12 Channels are entering APM and APM is outputing 8 of them from it's output rail. Channel 9 is programmed to come from EzUHF's Rx Channel 2 pins.

Fun, fun, fun.!

More details about the 2 lipos powering the APM later...

Now its time to talk about high class gliders.
Its time to talk about the Gracia!

I bought the plane from a friend in the local club and what a blast it was!
Perfection in balsa and carbon!
This is my first real plane (except foamies), so I was overhelmed by its grace.
The rigidity is exceptional! So light and so rigid!!

You can imagine my rage when I smashed it on the ground the first day I flew it!

Yes, yes I smashed it...
Don't ask me why, the only thing I know is that in the fifth flight of the day my FrSky Rx that I had on the plane (I wanted to fly it LOS before any FPV mod) locked-up and left me helpless watching this beauty dive to the ground.

Damage inspection:
- Fuse broke in two.
- Center wing shredded
- V-tail fins ripped off.
- Right wing lost its tip.

...to be continued...

(avoiding the painfull Gracia crash)

Today I flew my ASW-28 over a perfect scenery!

A castle near Mount Olympus.

I don't know what I did wrong but APM was confused about what is level to horizon.

Nevertheless, the place was...
... the screencaps talk for themselves...

Love this thread! Not sure why others aren't commenting, but you're doing what I plan on doing with FPV gliding! I've recently (finally!) got my Multiplex EZ Glider up and flying and will soon be installing my APM 2.5. I have just been having too much fun FPV'ing it around with no OSD, no pan/tilt/ nothing except a fixed camera to sit down and start installing all the electronic goodies I have already purchased for it!

Very sorry to hear your luck with the beautiful Gracia! That is a nightmare. The issues with 2.4ghz system "lockouts" are what keep me flying with either my Dragonlink or still trusting in my ancient 72mhz systems (NEVER had a lockout with them, maybe some glitches, but no total loss of control).

So, needless to say, I'm now very much convinced that a good upgrade from my EZ Glider would be the Lanyu AS28 like you've been flying. I really like how much more room there is in the canopy area as compared to the EZ Glider (That area is PACKED with electronics...)

Anyway, please keep posting updates and pics and info, I find it very informative and interesting!

This is an inspiring thread! I'm also on the fence for the ASW-28.

Sorry for what happened to the Gracia.

Thank you philthyy! Thank you for your kind words!
I can feel the joy you get when flying a simple fpv setup, but imagine this:
You fly with goggles and a well tuned pan & tilt system,
as you come for landing you start circling idle to loose alt.
All the time while circling your eyes are on the landing strip,
and in the final turn, while approaching, you turn your head and you follow the white strips of the runway. Flaps down, you turn your head right, then left to check the flaps on the wings.
Everything comes so natural with headtracking. The feeling is so immerse, that I often catch my self smiling without obvious reasons.

Or picture this:
The cloud ceeling is low, very low. You climb for a while and then start the thermall chasing.
Your head constantly moves to follow the clouds that surround you. And if you get inside, headtracking is the next best thing compared to actually being there.

I have flown most of my flights with a fixed cam. Headtracking is something else!
You can easily get a 3D feeling for your surroundings. Distances are more easily estimated, and flying above trees or between mountains is a breeze!
In a following post I will analyze my setup and the way my 9x, controls ServoCity's pan& tilt easily through Trinity or with my throttle- rudder stick.

Stringer thank you!
You give me reason to continue posting my thoughts, without feeling so alone!

The Gracia is slowly ressurecting from its ashes like a Phoenix.

The v-tail fins are repaired as they had only minor issues from the crash.
Today I also rebuilted the right aileron's tip, which was smashed.
I epoxied the broken ribs and reshaped the actual wing tip.

Any monokoting will be done after a friend of mine rebuilts the center wing.

The fuse was cleaned and I cut an extra rectangular opening for easy access to my APM stuff.
Maybe tommorow another friend will help me to reglue the severed fuse.

Ok, lets proceed with the APM installation on my ASW-28.
In the images can be seen the huge space you get inside ASW-28.
APM is floating inside the fuse ( I cannot imagine the cramping inside Gracia's slim sexy fuse )
In the inputs rail comes only one PPM servo cable from EzUHF, containing 12 channels. 4 for the plane, 2 for pan&tilt, 1 for flaps, 1 for EzUhf Link Quality (RSSI with royalty), 1 for flight modes and OSD panel switching and 3 spare for future Gracia use.

Normally (non fpv) Gracia flies 7 channel config, allowing complex surface mixing (crow, speed, thermall...etc) 2 for v-tail, 2 for Ail, 2 for flaps, 1 Throttle .

Ardu plane allows 2nd aileron control but I am not yet sure... Will see....

In this older image, PowerModule is still fullwired!
Now it is not! It is missing 2 limbs

Elaborating...

PM's 6 pin picoblade layout is: GND,GND, Current sensing, Voltage sensing, +5V, +5V.
This way APM and it's subsystems get their power from the motor lipo.
But, I am (doctor certified) weird with this stuff.
I do not like my avionics, my servos, my VTx getting power from my motor power source.

To much noise, to much danger for a puffed lipo cell while climbing, no redudancy...
To be specific, NO WAY!

So 2 wires from PM (2x+5V) kissed their way bye, bye out of ASW-28's white belly.

This way the motor pack is only feeding the motor. And it is important, because for weight shedding reasons, I fly a 6.600 2S A-Spec lipo with my custom, NASA improved, motor. Which drives a beautifull 15'' slow moving Graupner folder.

Oh I love seeing through my fpv cam this prop folding while gliding. Almost as much as I love watching, through the clear canopy the motor start moving when I give throttle.
Another biggie with the ASW-28 is the clear canopy! Combined with a headtracker can provide protection to electronics and still keep them viewable while flying.
