My SkySurfer 2000 mod
Sky surfer is not a newbie in FPV, but after hundrets of hours of flights I want to share my modifications.
First of all I've added extra carbon rods to strenghten fuselage and tail.
With sharp knife I've made cut in approx 2mm depth, then put inside rods and glue with medium CA.
Servos were moved from inside fuselage to new place just below wings.
Next step was to glue plywood as camera mount, and two strips in the middle of height inside fuselage
On this strip lay a "shelf" from plywood
this way I've got two areas: below shelf is space for whole electronics: Pitlab OSD, Pitlab Autopilot, and DragonLink receiver. And above the shelf there is a space for battery packs. I can eassily put inside fuselage two 5000mAh 3S packs for motor and 1000mAh 3S for video.
One pack is under the wings approx in the center of gravity, so it is optional, and can be added without need of re-balace plane.
SkySurfer is quite big airplane, but ith not so much EPP in some crucial places.
To make it stronger I've glued extra carbon.
In my opinion it is not enought, so whole fuselage was covered with thin synthetic canvas and glued with polymer glue "Dragon" for styrofoam. I like it very much on EPP, because after it becomes dry it is still elastic and do not broke in crash, and is very robust.
Last modification was made with tail. I do not like 8 inch propeller - t is very small for such a big airplane, so i cut tail in a half, and added carbon tube from fishing rod inside, then covered by flat piece of EPP. This way I can use even 10'' propeller :-) . Now it is "only" 9x5'' folded prop, but it is still more efficient than any 8''.
And results? Im more than happy.
Pls look at my longest flight:
more than 2 hours flight, 61km path travelled with only 4330mAh consumed :-) of course with thermal currents support.
But my last flights were as follows:
60min - approx 5000mAh consumed,
70min - 6000mAh,
90min - 6000mAh,
Average airspeed is 35 km/h, and avg. climbing is 100 meters per 200mAh, so I can easily climb to 2000 meters (6000ft) with 5000mAh battery.
Especially for this airplan I've bought 9pcs of Panasonic high drain (10A) 18650 size, 2200mAh li-Ion cells and made 3S3P pack, 6600mAh 30A, with 420gr weight.
I'm very satisfied with this pack, and now ordered similar Panasonic 10A cells but with 2900mAh capacity. It will be 8000mAh 420gr. pack, much lighter than LiPo with this same capacity and several times more durable than LiPo.
No mention safety - Li-Ion can't burn and leak with toxic ingredients.
I've made this same with video pack and replace LiPo with 14500 Li-Ion 950mAh enough for 2h flight.

I have the Sky Surfer V5 and want to mod it for long flights....I'm just not too good with woodwork. I've already purchased a Arkbird OSD and I was planning on running two 3c 3600 mAh in parallel..but this seems like a better idea.
