But I couldn't find a cheap 9116 TX. Most listings were at least $25 shipped,
way too much for a TX that wears out after 300 flights.

Yeah, just not worth throwing that money into it when I could spend the same for a new one straight from amazon. The 9104 rx will work, but it still will be a fully functional 3ch heli for $20.

I'll have to spend the money on a 250 size kit that I can beat around. That would be worth it to me.

It's not as snappy as my HK250GT, but close.

The spindle was made with an old ball bearing computer fan,
a couple of lids, an old junk laptop, some glue, and a few wire ties.

i was wandering what it was made of seems like i might have to make myself one cause i have a few 420mm steel pc fans lol and a acer lappy that the main board is fried

How right you are! My feelings exactly. There is no pucker factor involved in flying the 9116's and you can fly them wildly knowing that it's not going to cost a lot when you crash. I have two 6 ch's that I'll eventually get around to learning to fly again when the weather breaks but for now I'm having fun both modding and flying my 9116's.

and thanks for the dd tail video steve.. that was my next question.. how much extra control will it give? with the fat wiring i put on my main motor, i discovered tonight that when i really punch the throttle to maximum, i lose the tail.

If I wanted to stick with the stock main motor and dd tail could I get two of those and a Skyartec rx that is compatible with my Skyartec tx so that I could use the better tx?

More questions. The rx on my Wasp is mounted vertically on the side of the frame. Can that type of rx with an internal gyro be mounted flat instead without affecting the gyro function? I was assuming that it had to be mounted vertically and that's why I couldn't see how the new components would fit on the 9116. Also, is there a difference in rx's used for brushed or brushless motors?

What you describe is a normal operation if holding the heli in your hand. The tail motor is only used if the gyro senses the tail moving right (looking from behind). Otherwise it shuts down and lets the normal clockwise rotation of heli (from above) that is generated from the main blades. The important test is whether the heli is stable in hover in regard to tail position.

The std tail motor is suss, and some of the upgrades are not much better. I have a V912 tail motor on order that might be interesting to test along with the direct drive mod mentioned here.

They will work but a better option is the Turnigy 1440A servos from HobbyKing at $3.39 each. Others on this forum said that they are much better than the stock ones. I have two on order myself.

I know that. It would be worth to me, easy to find parts when I did crash and as long as I don't crash, they should last a lot longer. Better made etc..


I think I got a dud with this one. What part numbers were on your motors? Mine is a 9097 b motor for the 9097 coaxial heli. The segments of the commutator have some nasty carbon burn marks in the trailing edges. No glue used to hold the magnets tight. They stripped a mounting screw which required me to remover the motor top that holds the brushes so that I could pull all that out to punch the stripped screw out from that side against a bench.

Looks like I am not the only noticing that the swashplate is not moving enough to get any performance out of these 9116/Z101 units.

Here is a guy that did a mod to limit the movement of the swashplate up and down the shaft:
