Hi,
I fly with a growing bunch of electric glider fliers. Our field configuration and ages are leading us towards ALES. We are mostly flying Radian type equipment but are starting to see an advancement into 100" + birds. An electric BubbleDancer showed up just this Sunday.
Since most of our group are flying 2M foam birds. I am building a 100" kit that can use the same gear. I selected a OLY II varient that has shoulder mounted wings and can be configured in a variety of options. Those options would be spoilers, flaps, ailerons and be electric powered. Kits can be found at SKYBENCH.COM or MountainModels.com among others.
My goal is to demonstrate a glider that performs well above the foamy class yet is NOT A BUDGET BUSTER. I have built (and rebuilt ) enough birds over the years that this is an easy task. However I want it to be a reasonable project for beginers too.
So I need some sugestions on how to do the flaps and aileron options in a woody wing.( I have done spoilers several times previously.)

Hi,
Did some further research. Start by moving the built up TE strips forward and create a new location for the TE. Then add new balsa plank strips to form the ailerons and flaps. I could use my good balsa and make em solid.

How deep to make them is what I have not figured out yet

I think do to the length of the inboard pannels the flaps will not have to be very big chord wise. The aileron may need to be though. I'll use less dihedral and polyhedral as well.

I would make them 20 - 25% of the local chord for both the flaps and ailerons. I believe even though that may appear more than needed it will help with camber/reflex airfoil changes.

Another thing to consider is either full span or stopping one bay at the root, poly joint and tip. This will reduce the working are just a little but would aid in trim adjustments and checking if the control surfaces is warped.

Have you seen Sailplane Calc? It is an excel file that will easily calculate that and much more. There is an article that examines it too.

Here is what I hope to achieve:
Equal or lighter wing loading than a typical 2M foam glider. (we'll see)
Enough umph to get to competitive altitude
Improved flight performance ( no "rubber butt" effects)
Low cost to encourage participation (reuse 2M foamy's gear + wing servos)
Possibly use a less MAh battery to reduce weight / optional

I have a towhook version OlyII and thought it would be a great subject to build ALES style. That said i am looking forward to following what ever version you build and i hope the weather isn't too severe in the midwest to cause the maiden flight to be delayed until spring time.

A local flyer wanted something better than his radian and i suggested this model but he is hesitant to build. Maybe this will be the build-thread that he can look at later on and feel like it is 'do-able'. This model kit doesn't get any better for ease of building, lightness, ease of flying and bang for your $$'s !!

The big brown truck came today. I had time to look over the kit and WOW it looks really nice. Fine lazer cutting and quite complete.

This plane is easy to build, should be no more complicated than a Gentle Lady, just a bit bigger. If your freind has just a few tools and a FLAT table its fine for a first build. Might be nice to have help covering the first time even though it is as easy to cover as anything out there. Should be a fine first or twentyfirst glider.
I actually got the Mountain Models Scepter which is an updated OLY II.
Whenever you build a "classic" model you have to remember they are a classic for good reasons...generally because they fly well.
Now off to the RC cave to build! I'll post pics in a couple of days.
Work is a four letter word ya know.
