Mr Pringles Hydro project

Picked up a old MRP Mr Pringles hydro. Planning to do some mild mods and aiming for about 30+mph out of it on a budget. Banggood has a cheap combo I was thinking about. A Brushless 3000kv motor with a 50a water cooled esc. Running a 11.1v lipo. Thoughts? to small for the hull? thanks!

How would a 3000kv vs a 4000kv compare? Never seen a 4000 in a boat

I have the 4000kv motor and that esc.I tried it in a little footie sized ft007 at first on 2s and it ran a tiny bit better then stock.I'm in the process of putting that motor into a larger boat right now so I can try it in a hull that will handle 3s better. That's alot of rpm on 3s and I'm sure the little prop on the ft007 wouldn't handle it.

This is that motor on 2s, it runs so cold on 2s I doubt it'll get hot on 3s.I like it alot, dual bearings, etc.

Brushless Ft007 (0 min 45 sec)

Heres my build thread for the new boat I'm installing that motor into, it isn't very big I went from 12" to a 16" hull

Here is my MRP Miss Budweiser hull painted as Miller High Life that I retrofitted with brushless running gear.

I used this motor

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBNYB&P=Z

60A Turnigy esc

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._Boat_ESC.html

3S battery and 42mm prop

Motor temps get above 150*F if you run hard for more than 2 minutes. If you prop down under 40mm you can increase run time and lower motor temps below 140*F. With this setup my boat runs in the upper twenty mph range and handles great.

You're welcome. I don't race the boat, but it's one of my favorite toys at the pond. In my opinion, a 20mm motor is too small for the Mr. Pringles hull. At a minimum, I would recommend a 28mm X 60mm inrunner with a 60A esc. You would probably get decent run times with a 32-35mm prop. The speed however would be well below your target of 30+ mph. An inexpensive 36mm X 50mm motor like this http://www.banggood.com/FS-536325361...-p-932278.html on 2s would be faster and more efficient. Good luck with it. I hope you have as much fun with yours as I do with mine.

That motor is WAY too small for a boat that size. It was originally run on two 540's geared together, so I would suggest at least a single 540 brushless motor in it.

To put it in perspective, a 16" hydro I had ran on a 2040 motor (20mm diameter, 40mm long).

Thanks for the feedback! I had a change of heart. This boat is a deluxe kit brand new. Already has the 2 540 in it. I decided to keep the 2 540s, and buy a ESC and ditch the MSC that supports 2 motors and runs a lipo

So plan now is- use the original 2 540s brushed with a ESC and running 1 11.1v lipo pack on it. Thoughts? Would the weight savings be more benefial then running 14 volts with 2 nimhs that weigh alot?

Here is what I am working with. I just built it still need to do more paint work on the driver, its a awesome looking boat. I also had a spare stainless prop that fit I stuck on as well. Picked this up on ebay for $75 shipped, totally unbuilt

CWBETB,

a 4000 kv motor would be for a 2 s lipo package Im thinking a boat like this was originally designed for 12 nicad cells on 2 550 mabuchis or johnson brushed so I would be looking to make it 3s or 4s boat with a brushless kv around 1500-2700 kv. A cheap brusless 540s or540l $20.00 will do well in this boat youd save weight and problems putting the gearbox and motors to the side for another project.
Another option is to make it a LSH boat and put an aq sv27 or proboat 3630 in it. I remember this kit and the bud. I have the Bud Light tunnel they used to make. Looks like you found one in very good shape. Very Lucky.... If you want to run the small high kv motors use them in the gearbox, but honestly direct drive would be very practical in this application with a suitably sized motor. I imagine the boat would run quite a bit faster than 30mph.

For this abs hull use backing at the transom and turn fin areas. These hulls can get brittle and crack in these areas. Thin aluminum sheet will work.

Thanks for the reply! This boat has been giving me major headaches. At first I thought Ill just use the stock motors witha traxxas evx2 on nimh packs to see how it ran. 2nd time out burned a motor up Boat aso takes in alot of water., and had alot o steeing issues. So been searching for leaks and revamping the steering.

I am now going with 2 Traxxas titan marines "550" with the evx2 and running 2 lipo packs 7.4v 3000. See how that works.

This is my first hydro, feels very hard to control over my cats/monos, seemed to move rather fast before the motor burned up

I dont want to discourage you but that gearbox and brushed equipment will be more of a hassle and money in the end. Together they still wont put out as much as one good 36mm can would. You have to consider lossses in the gearbox and also what happens when the gears wear out? Before you end up with alot of holes in the hull from trying different things please consider......

If water is getting in the boat its likely from the rudder rod entry or leaks threw the mounting holes. Sometimes putting some silicone glue or duoble sided tape there to make a good seal between the bracket and the hull.

Always tub test her first.

The generic motor below is $27.00 3630 3300kv motor which should be good for a 3s lipo setup find something similat in 1500-2200kv and it will be a good 4 s motor. The proboat motor I think is ideal for a 4s setup is a liitle more at $60.00 but it comes with the water jacket and has a higher pole count.

So I moved all the components I bought from Mr Pringles to a Kyosho Jet Stream 800 project. The weight just killed the hydro. I will be going a similar route as Chief did. USing a Aquacraft Wildcat EP motor and a 50amp esc, water cooled with a 11v lipo. Im going to try to mount the motor on the stock heat sink and use the gear, see how that works if no good then direct drive.

Cheif has motivated me a bit. I went with that aquacraft 1800kv from the Wildcat EP, direct drive, even added some cooling and a pickup. Have a 50amp esc on the way water cooled as well. Will see how this combo works on 3s

1800 kv will be more suitable for 4 s setup 2650 kv would have been more suitable for 3s operation. It will work but it wont be as fast as it could have been. Still a bit small small in my opinion and way overpriced at 45 dollars........

Did you do a tub test to find the leaks?

Good luck
