I would not recommend a Nook. I had an early one, it never had many features implemented and just seemed to stall after it was bought. The Kindle is the premier ebook store and since this is a "lifetime" purchase... I would go with the market leader (kindle is by a wide margin). The books I bought for my nook would appear to be at a dead end. Maybe I can get an android app for the nook, but that would be silly since I only have a smattering of books on it.

I bought a Nook, and I bought a Kindle 2. I kept using the Kindle 2, and replaced it with a Kindle Keyboard (kindle 3rd gen). The Nook will likely end up on ebay soon if I choose to end its repurpose as 'thing what lays around that I no longer use.'

IG, do you have another e-reader (prog)?

If so, again why don't you convert your books to allow them to be used on it?

I was told by the wife that the nook is the one. No room for argument there.

We have a kindle fire. The wife really likes it.

I have lots of ways to get the books back. My own personal morality would have no problem with using a backup copy (in what ever format I desire) of already purchased media.

I am just glad I only spent a small amount (relative to my usual book buying budget) on Nook purchases. I had to consider it money wasted so move on to a better long term platform.

After all, the big expenditure on Ebooks is not the reader... it's the media that you purchase. Choose the platform that has the best prices, selection, compatibility and future and let that drive your reader. Right now, you can read a Kindle book on every platform except Blackberry. Nook was never able to do that for me and the Nexus fixed the Blackberry problem.

In particular, I know the wife wants to read ebooks from the countywide library system. And again, I think if she could watch Netflix on it over the wifi we have in the house she would be really happy. If she could play Sudoku on it too she'd be in ecstatic.

I think at that point you are leaving the reservation - the newer supersized tablet "readers" are best for something like that with the 9" screens like the Ipad - but then you are at $300 and close to your Ipad mini.., galaxy , etc.

I think a good tablet plus one of the superlight backlit e-ink reader is the hot ticket. the size and weight and battery life difference is huge.

If she is not really much of a reader, then skip the e-reader and just get a tablet.
