RCModelReviews FPV Diversity

This thread has information (board design, components, etc.) needed to create two and three way FPV Diversity with hysteresis in a *very* low budget.
The original two way diversity design is based on RCModelReviews (check youtube) video.. The three way diversity is a new design we've added.. See details below

Questions welcome!

------------

Edit: first tests with the diversity controller using arduino PWM through a low-pass filter look promising.
Next test once my RX5808 arrives..

------------

Edit : First rev of the 3 way diversity controller with LM324N & 74HC4053P added. Overall component cost should still be under 2$

------------

Edit: Another rev of the 3 way diversity controller with LM324N & 74HC4053P + 2*74AHCT1G08DBV AND gates

------------

Edit: Original two way diversity tested & working !

------------

Edit 5/03/14: Two FPV receiver designs added. These drastically lower the cost of adding diversity to your system.
- Rx5808 based Rx for Boscam designed by TimJC
- AWM662RX based Rx for Airwave designed/edited by GilCD85

------------

Edit 5/11/14: Two way diversity tested & working with real video output (see vid)

------------

Edit 5/19/14 Great news guys. The 3 way diversity board is working!
What makes it even more fun is that you can put one together in 3.7$!! (shipping of the parts included )
If you're short on cash & up to the challenge of putting this together on a proto board the cost is a staggering 72 cents (0.72$..) lol!

I received the board from OSHPark today and put it all together.
I connected the 3 RSSI inputs to my arduino and sent alternating signals to the board and looks like it's tracking well.. I'll run a real RSSI test with vid input probably later this week.

Cool, I've been following his device too. I was using Multisim to model it. Seems to work.

Here is my go at drawing up Bruce's schematic in Eagle, and adding pin headers. Let me know if you see any issues with it.

For the board I just tossed the parts on and hit the autorouter button. You should be able to upload $1.29_DIY_Diversity_Autoroute.brd to OSHPark.com to order them.

I generally like through holes vs. pin headers. First post updated with board layout.
7.70$ for 3 boards in OSHPark

very nice. i will try to build this diversity too. the capacitor is 0.1 microF ou miliF? in the bruce video it tells miliF, what is the voltage rating of the capacitors?

thanks

The capicators are .1 microfarad or 100 nanofarad. The voltage rating isn't critical, and 16v or greater will work fine.

I watched the video from Bruce and thought it was a great idea.

We had a quick play today to see if we could knock up something following his guide. We just added some headers to make it neat. I think we will end up shrink wrapping it to keep it all clean.

Bit of mess on the bottom but it works fine.

wow nice build MatZeRO! I like the headers there. Make it easy to plug and play.

resqueria, as mentioned above, the capacitor is 0.10 uF. Easy to tell - just look for '104' on the cap.

If there is a demand for it I can make a smaller version of the board.
I kept it so that all the components are on one side and through hole (30x34mm currently). Going 2 sides & SMD can probably reduce the size by ~20-30%.

I didn’t like the dead bug style, so i added it to a prototype pcb board. Its about 3x3cm. Attached pictures are of my build. (red black plug = power, black white = video out, other 2 are video inputs)

I haven’t yet added the hysteresis but should be easy enough when i get around to it. Also if needed i can upload better photos (photos were taken with my phone)

Also thanks for the original plans Bruce, awesome stuff

Nice looking build Len02013. Did you test it already? Does it flicker?
I was surprised when Bruce's build tested fine on a breadboard but showed flickering later on.

Umm I've only tested it with one receiver, still waiting on another to arrive. It did occasionally flicker, but I thought that may have been my hand/arm in between the tx / rx or multipath as it was inside, I didn't see the other led flicker on. I can still solder in the resistor/ capacitors for the hysteresis, so at this stage I'm not worried.

When testing, I did notice, sometime when both video inputs were unplugged (so no voltage on rssi) the two led's were half bright. I'm guessing it was really quickly flicking between the two. but mainly it would flick to the orange led when both unplugged.

Also your pcb version looks good
