Great postings on the hing techniques. I tended to make a mess the first time trying the old slot and stuff. Foam doesn't slot.

Here are the pics of finishing up my repair. Hope to test fly it this weekend.

Scott..the trick is to use a NEW blade..Not near new ........not one that has only been used to cut wood/plastic... New blades work like a surgeons scalpel...no denting of foam.. If you use that blade just for cutting the hinges it should last a few planes.

Almost lost my WACO this evening. I was doing some touch and goes and either misjudged the plane's attitude, or hit a hard clump of grass, just as I was throttling up to take off and nosed it over.

Apparently the prop abruptly stopping while the throttle was near full was more than the ESC could take. When I got to the plane and set it back on it's wheels smoke was coming out of the front and from under the battery hatch. At first I thought a short had caused the battery to ignite. But when I removed the hatch, the battery was fine the smoke was coming from the ESC. I unplugged the battery and after a minute or two the smoke subsided.

Looking where the ESC sat there is a lot of burn damage to the surrounding foam. I guess I'm lucky the whole plane didn't ignite.

I'll put a new ESC in tomorrow, hopefully all will be well again.

fried...

Sorry to the about the burnout. I had a very similar experience with my p47. A few taps of the prop in the tall grass on taxi... poof! seems to be not terribly uncommon with these low amp esc's.

Slap a new one in there and get back in the air. Maybe throw in a 45 amp and never look back.

I've been flying the dog water out of my Waco lately and absolutely having a blast. This one is so smooth on grass landings it's almost unbelievable.

Keep flying!

Lucky you Jim....Sometimes "stock" stuff is just too marginal.. I'd be doing what millerr said and err on the side of safety.

Motion RC is now selling some of the Dynam line up, with replacement parts! I ordered a 50 amp ESC from them, should have it early next week.

Finally got around to replacing the hinges on my WACO's tail. Ended up using Dubro pin hinges, heck of a lot easier to install than slotted hinges! I made the mistake of not pushing the rudder hinges deep enough into the foam and ended up with a slightly wider gap than I like. With the elevators I did not repeat the same mistake and have a nice tight gap. The foam hinges although weakened were still a ways off from separating. I left the ailerons alone for now but will monitor regularly.

Got her out for one flight last night, like putting on an old pair of shoes, she didn't disappoint. The nav lights worked superbly as it was getting on in the evening and their glow was a big help for orientation, especially for landing. Hopefully she will see some more airtime this evening if the winds drop.

RF, have you tried any of that new Foam-Tac glue that dries pliable? I have been very happy with that stuff.

Yeah, it's gonna be an on-line thing for you, millerr74. None of the craft stores local to me carry it. I got mine this year at the WRAMS show in the Meadowlands, NJ.

No, can't say as I have. My LHS is a bit of a back woods affair that caters mostly to the two dimensional types, meaning the cars and trucks crowd. I know they do not carry it. Will have to look at the mail order shop see if they do. I had never used pin hinges before, always slotted or like back in the good old days, cloth tape. A bit of 5 min epoxy in the pin hole and all was well in the world again. Had to use epoxy as my foam safe CA had gone off like a blob of jello, totally useless.

Hobby people always has it in their stores. I haven't used it but the guy swears its better than CA or epoxy for foam. Just needs time to dry. I think its flexibility has advantages for foam. Think I might buy a bottle next time I visit. He is a pretty stand up guy so I trust his opinion.

Miller looks like ebay is cheaper if no hobby people in you neck of the woods!
