Sometimes plans come with a template sheet that you can cut out and a mist of contact cement on the wood and paste the template down and cut away. No templates, go to copy store and make a copy of the plans to cut up. You can trace the parts on tracing paper and use carbon paper. You can also carefully use carbon paper and trace the part onto the wood. Several ways to do it. I even used a dress pattern wheel, and traced the parts on to the wood. With this method you get a series of pin holes in the wood that you can connect with a soft pencil.
