Want to get into rc cars .. total newbie.

Hi All,

I am a total newbie in the RC world. I have finally decided to get into RC cars and want to know how to begin.

I am interested in indoor racing and so am looking into some beginner models, makes that can get me into it.

Also budget is my concern as well, at this point I don't know if I will like it or not and so I don't want to put too much money into it.

I also did a search on beginner threads and I read couple of threads but they were on offroad trucks so I didn't get much info and finally decided to create a new thread

any info ...highly appreciated..

Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at what classes there are at local indoor tracks? That's the best place to start, then once you know which class you can sort out which car to start with.

1/12 scale is really fast It might be a little to much for a rookie. On the other hand 1/12 scale cars are pretty cheap and not to terrible to set up. See if the have a spec class in either category that might be cheaper. I bet someone at the track will have a chassis they will sell you. Set up on a 1/10scale on-road car can be a pain in the butt. Most tracks will have some people to help you through that. The track will be your best source of info. Ask questions. Most guy's are pretty cool about it. If they aren't then you don't want to hang there anyway.

Ask what tires they run batteries and electronics. You don't have to break the bank to race Practice is cheap and the most effective thing you can buy.

If you are new, register at www.ultimaterc.com (down two days from now for maintainence) and check it out.
There are guides to find out what car is for you and the owner of the forum does exelent reviews of cars. It's just like RC groups, just mostly dedicated to cars.

Those are scales, not classes... Is it just pan cars, do they have F1 or touring car classes as well? How about a tamiya "Mini" class (1/10th scale mini chassis)?

Let me add to that-

Only ask about car advice from the people who have a car that finishes the races in one piece.

So finally I attended the rc race at my local race club and I really liked it.

These are the classes that they race into:

Stock Touring
Modified Touring
Stock 1/12th
Modified 1/12th
Scale Spec
Novice

I am planning to start in the novice class with clubs sport touring cars but eventually I would like to buy my own. The model is 1/10th.

I talked to couple of guys at the club and they gave me tonnes of info which was difficult for me to digest so I am asking here

I have following questions for 1/10th stock touring class :

1. What kit should I buy ?
2. What radio and receiver should I look into? I want to buy a programmable transmitter that can be configured with multiple receivers.
3. What is speed control?

some people at the club already offered me used cars and I understand that would be the best way to get started but it's good to understand things and do my homework.

Thanks in advance to all you experts

Used cars sounds good. That is how I get most of my cars. I also think that used cars are good for beginners, who tend to be (no offense) very hard on cars and their cars tend to have shorter lifespans. So it makes sense to get something cheaper, and then invest in an expensive car when you don't crash as much and get good at maintenance.

As far as picking a car, I would look at what there is up for grabs and ask the opinions of some of the better drivers on which cars to get. Make sure to pick good drivers, because they tend to have more experience in RC and pushing rc cars to their limits makes weak points show, so they tend to have good advice on which cars to get
