suggestions on cleaning and restoration

Hi Folks,

I have several old Testors 049s and I thought it would be neat to crank one up and maybe even build an airframe for it. They've been sitting many years and I was wondering if anyone out there might have some suggestions as to the best way to clean this type engine and otherwise get it ready for running. The engine turns over freely and seems to have good compression.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

Use heat to get it moving. COvering gun or hair drier. A true heat gun can be used with caution.

Once you can move, use solvent or fuel to clean out old castor oil. If you use solvent, oil immediately after cleaning.

Pinecone,

Thanks. Should the entire engine be soaked in the fuel or solvent or perhaps just used as a cleaner with a Q-Tip?

Thanks

I heat to get things moving, then drip some fuel into the intake and exhaust.

Flip and repeat.

Same with the solvent, you are trying to get solvent (or the alcohol in the fuel) into the engine to dissolve the old caster oil.
