2012 SVSS Summer Soaring Challenge
The dates for the event will be June 23-24, 2012. Contest details as follows:
Classes - The classes offered are: Unlimited, 2-Meter, RES, Nostalgia and ALES. Woody class sailplanes are welcome but will fly in their span/function class. Junior, Senior, Open combined, no Gray Cup class. ALES will be scored as a single class, no subclasses. ALES class will be integrated into the overall flight order matrix, will launch in sequence similar to all other classes, and will use the same graduated landing as Unlimited Entries - You may enter up to two classes. Frequency Control - Entry on 72 MHz is limited to 4 entries per frequency, no exceptions without permission of the CD. There will be no transmitter impound, 2.4 GHz is encouraged. Tasks - Thermal Duration, 5 minute first flight, 10 minutes thereafter. Landings - 25' graduated landing tape. Nostalgia will be 25 points in or out. Trophies - Trophies will be awarded as follows; 1st - 5th place in Unlimited, 1st - 3rd in RES, 2-Meter, Nostalgia and ALES. The trophies will awarded based on the best combined, 2 day scores. Food – Your entry fee includes lunch at the field for both days. Of course you may bring your own food but there will be no discount on your entry fee. Our field is looking great, thermals are popping, and every few days we have just enough breeze to make things interesting.
A week ago I came to the field for practice; no one else was there. As I was driving up I saw our field covered in hundreds of birds that I thought were crows. When I got closer I realized they were ALL hawks. I scared off some of them by setting up the high start but hundreds stuck around to help me find the best air. Every time a good sized thermal blew through a bunch of them started circling. This went on for several hours until I left. The attached pic is an example. So yes, we usually have thermal indicators flying around the SVSS field  Chris B. |

Chris sent a note out to the club yesterday that the no-see-ums were back. If we get lucky and get 3-4 days of 100F+ between now and the contest they may die off.
Regardless, be prepared with your favorite brand of repellant. We will try to have some at the event too. JT |
