Build Log
Cessna 185

Well I kind of left the hobby for a while so this will be my first build thread in about 5? years. Really? Has it been that long? Wow. Anyways, apparently not having done enough of these Cessnas, I decided I needed a more scale 185 than the sorta scale one I did for Mountain Models way back when. This one is just a tic bigger than my norm having 220ish square inches of wing area. It's designed around a Park 250 motor and I'm hoping to come in at about 7oz ready to go. It will also deviate from my usual by having flaps and ailerons. I just got the balsa bits in the mail from Manzano Laser today and they are of the usual outstanding quality. Thanks Charlie and Vicki. Here is a pic from my drawings, I will have some construction shots up soon.

Dave

You're welcome Dave.

And glad to have you back for a visit. Wondered if all those copter blades had made you dizzy

Charlie, yes the heli blades made me dizzy for a while, but not as dizzy as the motorcycle wheels did.

I forgot how much I loved the smell of freshly lasered balsa.

Likely to be an outstanding model.. as were your previous ones.
Recently been building 'Czech style' stick 'n tissue constructions.
Notable in that there are No stringer notches.. at all. and I fit a 3/4" square Ali tube as Fuse jig / backbone ..
No bananas possible, no clumsy table jigs either
No notches Really does make for a very good covering /skin result.
Those Czechs are well skilled.
Recomended... for 'next time' ?

One cure for Cessna Fever is to buy one..either outright or in partnership?
I have a wee 152. Actually cheaper than a car.. the insurance certainly is.

Around here can't fly a 152 much of the year. Density altitude is frequently too high.

I took up RC instead of buying a full size. Like a horse, cheap to buy, expensive to own/fly (for fun).

Bare, I like the idea of no stringer notches and I have done it before, but I'd rather have the support that the notches give. I usually sand the formers between the stringers so you cant see them anyways. As much as I would like to have a full scale, If I flew anything like I drive I would surely hurt myself. Plus I need another expensive hobby.

Thanks Glenn, really looking forward to flying again. I still like the helis but there is nothing relaxing about flying them.

Here are some more pics. Construction begins with building the carbon/balsa wing mount and landing gear former. Next is the obligatory no glue assembly shot.

Duuude!

I almost started my MM kit the other day with intentions of making it look like Jim Tweto's. But whats a bush plane without flaps? Is this to become a kit from Charlie?

I got the basic fuselage framed up as well as the motor mount. I also assembled the tail wheel bracket and dummy disc brakes.
