I think it's done either way. A lot of the straight ALES ships are throttle-on-switch, because a full-throttle climb to altitude is the only motor they ever use. But for other uses (my own recreational gliders, say), where I use varying throttle for different situations, it's on the stick as per most airplanes.

I have throttle on the stick, but when I flip the throttle-kill switch, the throttle stick becomes the butterfly stick.
