i'm still tending toward the 5065 320... my 5055 580 may well offer a good turn of speed, but i'll be flying mine largely stock with little to no further strengthening... i'm worried the 580 may well risk tearing the wings off lol
hence, i'm very curious to see how Status goes with his... thanks buddy!
Well my 'eBay special' Aeolian 5065 x 320Kv arrived as I was leaving for the office this morning - looks a surprisingly well wound motor (should know spent the weekend rewinding the original - time consuming job!!!). Came with all the extras but most importantly fits perfectly to the engine and prop mounts on this bird. Hopefully get her fitted tonight and a test during the week.

will keep the 17x10 for the 5065-400kv when it arrives in 12-24 days...... clicked the wrong freight option lol.
So finally a piece of Physics to figure this all out [big shout out to 'Straight Up' for the spread sheets]

Took 4 measurements along the chord of each of the 3 blades - average resultant pitch of this things bog standard prop = 10.55inch with 16.7inch diameter.

No wonder its frying the motors and esc!!!!

On fully charged 6S at 390Kv that means 2664W@127A before losses are accounted for - SMOKING is an understatement!!

On fully charged 6S at 320Kv that means 1472W@70A before losses are accounted for - not likely to prop hang on this setup but no doubt perfect for Sunday flying.

You gotta wonder whether these manufacturers even take a sample to the field to test before flooding the market??

PS: if science is science and you're running a 16x10 on 6S 560Kv then I expect that prop will have you clocking 130-140kph when she unloads. Must have been gasping for air on static test but watch out that's 200+Amps draw in the air. 4S maybe 5S more likely power source for this???

Aeolian rules!!!

Took it out for a spin this morning (finally back in the air ) - the 320Kv pulls 74A from a fully charged 6S on the stock prop. Enough grunt for short take-off and sport flying, long enough vertical climbs and those that want to FPV it will be happy to know that 8 minutes of sport flying came down battery only half discharged!! and everything cool as a cucumber, literally motor, esc and batt in the low 40 degrees C.

So the stock prop 17x10,5x3 probably best suited to a 340ish Kv motor..

Hi everybody ,

this bird is 100,000% attractive and of course, I'm thinking about the order .
I like my 70" Extra-260-EP very much, but want to buy a large biplane too.

But is EPO strong enough for such a big 3D plane? I've got an EPO 1200 mm MX-2, I can not say that the model is very hard and robust. Pitts is much bigger, so I'm a little bit afraid.

I mean that ply/balsa will always keep shape, and EPO is relatively soft and deforms more or less even if you fly without great crashes.

Stock setup

I fly mine stock. I have about 30 flights on it so far. I have 2 4000mah 6s 30c from Value Hobby and get about 6-7min flight time running them down to about 3.7v/cell. I also have a 3300mah 6s 30c which I get about 5min on. I don't understand the amperage wattage numbers being discussed. I just got a Watt meter from Value Hobby 100A max and ran the stock setup with my 4000mah 6s 30c battery fully charged. I got approximately 66Amps at 24V for a recorded 1580 watts. Next I want to get a tach and a fish scale to measure RPM and Static thrust. I am trying to figure out what prop to replace the stock one with. Also has anyone replaced the prop shaft adapter? My friend broke his prop hub, so I need to put a shorter prop shaft adapter on it and run a 17x8/ 17x10? either 2 or 3 blade

Regards,
John

On your flights, looks like an average of 30-33A is being pulled from your packs
or about 700watts

I was looking at the tail wheel mounting... seems there is nothing to mount it to, other than the foam underside of the fuselage? doesnt look right to me...
Took a pic for you - you need to use the 25mm screws that only bite in about 5mm - the mount is pre-installed (plastic tubes) from the top of the fuz (beneath stab wing).

thx for the pic mate, appreciated
i noticed the plastic tubes deep in the fuse, but with the recessed tail wheel mounting point, it looked to me that the recess was for a plastic fitting... whew, ok, i'll carry forth

i was in the LHS the other day picking up gear for my fpv Bix, i had an impulse buy on 2 Xoar wood props lol, 17 x 8 & 17 x 10... how do you guys reckon the stock motor will handle these, or even a 17 x 6?

ooops, I just realized i had bought 17 x 6 and a 17 x 8 two bladed props
on the stock motor i'll prob start with the 17 x 6
any opinions as to how the stock motor would handle these props?

hey Status, do you still have the original burnt out motor?

A quick check on EAS suggests the following:

Assumed 390Kv gives 70A draw for a 17x6 and 94A for a 17x8 (7300rpm).

Based on a few no-load tests I ran, it seems that the actual Kv is closer to 440Kv in which case a 17x6 will draw 100A and a 17x8 up to 135A (8200rpm)

That's all theory, would be good to know what you're actually recording - I would suggest keeping max amps below 100A to save frying it like a couple of us have done already on the stock set up.
