Build Log
Profile Fairey Albacore Bipe

Happy Thanksgiving All,

The weather has been really nasty on the Texas gulf coast so I decided to start a new project. I've always loved biplanes so I decided to draw up plans for a profile Fairey Albacore and here's the progress thus far. The fuse core is two pieces of 3/4" pink foam laminated with MPF (ModelPlaneFoam.com) sheeting the sides. I chose to use a KFM2 wing top and bottom with ailerons on the bottom only for now. Shooting for 22 oz AUW and so far, on track. Power will be an RCTimer 2212-15 930kv, swinging a 10x5 slo-fly and a 1500 mAh batt.

Plan came out to a 37.5" wing span. I printed at 106% so this build is a 40" wing span. The plan is a work in progress and will post it when I make the final revision.

SPECS:
Wing type = KFM2
Wing span = 40"
Length = 31"
AUW (battery & painted) = 23oz
Prop = 9x7 3 Blade Master Airscrew
Motor = RCTimer 2212-15, 930kv
ESC = 30 Amp
Battery = 1500mAh, 20c, 3s1p Li-Po
Servos - 4 x 9g
COG 1.8 inches from top wing leading edge
Static thrust = 29 (calculated) @ 14amps
Motor thrust offset = ~1-2 deg right, 0 deg down
Ailerons - 60% throw & 40% expo
Elevator - 45% throw & 30% expo
Rudder - 30% throw & 40% expo

Aileron Differential - 35%
Aileron/Rudder Mix - 35%

Very clean design and build of an interesting plane. I look forward to your successful maiden flight.

The Albacore is ready for a maiden flight, just waiting for the wind from the last front to settle a bit. Will post a flight update and video following the maiden.

Specs and plan updated in post 1.

Maiden-ed yesterday in about 6-8 mph wind with some gusts, not ideal. Initial hand launch at about half throttle and she wanted to turn left. Trimmed the left turn out with rudder. Experienced some adverse yaw in an aileron turn so turned on aileron/rudder mix of 20% and turns were more stable.

Added ~2 degrees of right angle to the motor.
Will test aileron differential next time out.
Will test aileron/rudder mix of 25% next time out.

Landing was sweet on the wheels in short grass. All in all not a bad 1st flight but she needs more attention to get her dialed in.

Thanks Martin,

This is the first time I've used aileron differential and it does make a noticeable difference. I took her out yesterday in an 8 mph wind with light gusts to 10 and she did well. I am very pleased with this little foamie!!

Thanks again,

Mikey

Really nice plane. How did you do the dihedral with the CF spar?

Hey thanks flyelectcl,

This is how I do it. I'm sure there is a better way and hopefully others will weigh in on this question.

I first cut a short piece of coat hanger wire 3" long and mark the center. I then mark the center of the carbon square tube. I use 4mm carbon square tube. Then with my X-Acto saw, I cut a grove down the center of the carbon spar across three sides, top and two sides, leaving the bottom of the spar in tact. This allows me to bend the carbon spar once it's cut. You may have to cut into the bottom just a bit to get the carbon to bend. I then slide the 3" coat hanger wire in the spar and work it down to the center cut line. When the center mark of the 3" coat hanger wire appears in the cut in the spar, I gently start bending the angle in the spar. Once an angle is established, the 3" wire will pretty much stay where it's at.

I then place the spar against my 36" ruler and start bending it gently until I get close to the dihedral measurement I want. I place a scrap piece of paper on my work surface and/or place a piece of tape under the center of the spar in preparation for the epoxy gluing. At the center of the spar, fill the center section with epoxy making sure you get enough in to fill the inside of the spar and coat the 3" coat hanger wire. Then I tape one side, ruler and spar, to my work surface. I make the final bend corrections to get the dihedral I want and tape the angle end to my work surface.

Once the epoxy is cured, I cut two pieces of flat carbon and epoxy one on each side of the spar for added strength at the joint. Once cured, I sand the flat carbon flush with the square tube.

This works for me but I really hope someone replies with an easier way to accomplish this.

I hope this helps,

Mikey

Thanks for the kind words Dave,

She did turn out better than expected, such a docile flyer. I'll be adding a torpedo soon and will update the plans when done.
