1/12 Stormovik Conversion - Astro, Jeti, Endo?
I've decided to convert a Warbirds LTD IL-10 Stormovik to e-power. It is a 1/12 scale combat aircraft with a f-glass/kevlar fuselage and a balsa sheeted Clark Y wing, designed for a 2-cycle .20-.26 engine. Wingspan is 46" and AUW in glow trim is 46oz.
I would like it to be a strong performer, with plenty of speed and good vertical. Basically, something that can keep up with all the overpowered sport ships at the local field.
I have three thoughts on a power set-up, but my e-experience until now has been limited to 400/450 powered aircraft, so I may be totally off base.
Option 1 - Astro 05
This is the motor recommended by the manufacturer for e-conversion. According to A/F's website, the 05 is good for 200W, which puts me at the low end of the power scale. Plus, for the cost of an 05 and esc., I might as well go brushless.
Option 2 - Jeti Brushless
The price is right, but I really haven't seen a lot of performance data on the Jetis. H.L. says the 15/4 is good for sport aircraft up to 56oz.- my guess is that the Stormovik will be in the mid-50oz. range, and that performance may be marginal. The 30/3 is marketed for aircraft up to 88oz., which seems like overkill.
Option 3 - Endoplasma, geared
Now that Gary Wright has proven the worth of the geared Endo with the E3D, it seems like a very viable solution. My main concern is prop size - a 12" prop seems like way too much for this plane. The Storm. won't have gear, and a 12"er sounds like prop 'n gearbox bustin' fun. Something in the 9" range sounds more appropriate. I really have no idea what type of ratio / pinion I would need to get 35ish amps.
Any thoughts on the above power systems or personal experience with similar conversions would be appreciated. Although money is not a real concern, I'd like to keep the costs reasonable so I can afford to do some other projects - I've got my name on the long list for an E3D, and would like to do something like a 4 Star 40 conversion this winter.
Thanks all, Pete
