Heed the HK warnings

Hobby King really are a bunch of clowns.

Despite the warnings here, I decided to give them a try with one order and see how it went.

After reading around the net about the Turnigy 9x radio, it really appealed to the hacker in me and I decided that it was the radio I wanted, and Hobby King is the place to get it.

So I tried using email alerts to catch it in stock. That failed as they would sell out before I could get it ordered. I read you have to order anyways and wait on it. So I ordered one 9x radio from the USA warehouse, thinking it would ship faster.

So I get FOUR email alerts of stock arrival, and they never ship me anything.

I went to their "Live" support and submitted a request and asked why my order wasn't being filled after four shipments of radio's.

No answer, the request is never assigned to a specialist. I waited 5 days or so and finally said "Fine!". I canceled my order and was happy to see my credit show up on the web site as store credit. Not my favorite refund, but I can understand.

I was thinking I'd made a mistake ordering from the USA warehouse. So I tried to order from the Hong Kong warehouse, and guess what? They are not accepting pre-orders for that radio.

So I can understand them not shipping me one from Hong Kong, when I ordered from the USA. Probably just a logistical problem. And I can understand since they are having problems delivering them that they shut off pre-orders.

Kinda frustrated, I decided I would order the FrSky 9x version from elsewhere and spend my store credits from Hobby King. So far, a little frustrating but understandable.

So I spend an hour picking out batteries, a charger, various connectors and so on and go to place my order. I got my order within $2 of the canceled radio cost.

I get to Paypal and they want another $23!

I go back to Hobby King, cancel and try again. Eventually I figure out they only apply store credit to "product". Shipping charges you have to pay for with cash.

Now: WAIT A MINUTE. I have to pay money, to spend MY money?

So now it really dawns on me, just how f'n greedy these jokers are. Seriously, maybe this business style and customer relations flies OK in China, but pulling shenanigans like this in the US will wreck your reputation in no time.

Recommend looking elsewhere for gear. So far RCTimer treated me right.

You can request refunds to go back to the payment method instead of credits when you cancel an order.

No kidding. Somehow I missed that option on the page. Thanks for the info.

It's just one of those things you have to know I guess.

Here's my question and answer session with HK on that subject.

My Question to HK

If I have a $10 credit, can I request that be refunded to my PayPal account?

What do I need to do to have that done?

Hi ,
Thanks for contacting the HobbyKing Support Team.

That depends on how did you get the $10.00 USD. If you have paid it via paypal, we could refund it to your paypal account.

Thanks for emailing support.
If you have any other questions, please let me know.
Regards.

Thank you for your prompt answer.
I tried to find that refund policy on your website. Is it in writing on there?

A lot of people commented to me that they didn't know that was an option.
Thank you,
hoppy

Hi hoppy,
Thanks for contacting the HobbyKing Support Team.

It is not written on our website. If you have paid an order via paypal, and then cancel one item or the whole order, we could refund the payment to your hobbyking account or paypal account. Thank you for shopping with us and have a good day!

Thanks for emailing support.
If you have any other questions, please let me know.

I'm a little skeptical. I've never known hobbyking to actually answer a question in such a clear concise manner. It's almost written in English, and actually answers the original question. Hard to even imagine, really. Maybe they have one good employee there that goes by the fake name of "Rachel" who is outstanding, and maybe not.

In my dealings with them over a broken part of an airplane that are still continuing from July of 2011, I've never had any communication that even resembles this.

I have given up with them, and I won't ever make a 9th order. Number 8 was my last. So with that in mind, I won't go as far as calling total BS on this but that is only because I don't really care anymore.

Have a good day.

Only one comment, the information is real and useful to those who would like to get a refund rather than credits. You can take that to the bank.

If you doubt it, ask them the same questions...easy to prove/disprove.

Final cost

Ended up picking some house brand 6 channel mode one radio (hope I can mod it to Mode 2), a couple batteries and so on to burn up my credit. Final bill required another $77 above the $87 I initially tried to spend.

This is why they run this "no store credits shipping policy".

80% of their catalog is sold out and there's just to much bad craziness for me. Probably spend a little more, but get a more predicable experience elsewhere. Moving on......

Any suggestions for a site that doesn't gouge and is reliable etc? I got a couple things from RCTimer, but they don't have a massive catalog if I remember correctly. Any favorites?

Everything I ordered came in and worked fine. One exception though is the CT6b radio. It's missing the usb cable that is required to setup the radio for use.

Yes you could order it separately, and wait another 3 weeks, if only it was in stock......

Another $10 down the drain ordering parts to build my own.

Par for the couse. You can get the radio and cable from Leaders Hobby for about 26 bucks. The software that comes with the 6 channel flysky radios is pretty useless but there are several good downloadable programs on line. LowPriceRC is another good Chinese hobby store. So far I have had great service from both of them.
