Good proven brushless gimbal for a NEX 5 camera

This space is so hot and YouTube videos demonstrating them or reviews on them spotty. I'm looking for a NEX 5 brushless gimbal and gimbal controller to put on my octocopter. I'll be using the 18-55mm lens that came with the cam. I know proper setup of the gimbal is critical. However, I think setup only can take you so far and design is a critical factor. So far, these are the ones I've found:

NOTE: These are in no specific order. Don't assume 1 is the best or the last is the worst.

GIMBAL OPTIONS

1.) DYS (L-Bracket Gimbal family) ~$300
Many sites sell these, I'm providing one example
http://www.goodluckbuy.com/index.php...al+nex&x=0&y=0
I've heard the L bracketed gimbals (like the DYS gimbals) do not provide enough stability which causes vibrations and therefore should be avoided

2.) ZhaoYun Gimbals
2-Axis $549
http://www.hobby-wing.com/arris-zhao...-for-dslr.html
3-Axis $720
http://www.hobby-wing.com/arris-zhao...ss-gimbal.html
Sample Video:
Testvlucht Arris Zhao Yun 3 axis gimbal 16 02 13 mp4 v2 (3 min 12 sec)

3.) X-CAM Gimbals (seem pretty heavy at 760g)
2-Axis $485
http://www.hobby-wing.com/x-cam-x140...ss-gimbal.html
Sample Video:
X-CAM X140B for NEX5 Series Brushless Gimbal System Presents - Yangcheng Lake Hotel (2 min 49 sec)

4.) GHT NEXt Gimbal $212 (very interesting! not in stock anywhere)
With two brushless motors and control board/IMU, the entire gimbal weighs only 370g

Gimbal Thread:

Sample Video:
The YouTube video doesn't look that great supposedly because it is being down sampled by YouTube from the original frame rate of 60p. Owner says raw video is very smooth.

5.) DJI Zenmuse for NEX camers >$2000 (crazy!!)

Sample Video:
DJI S800 Evo in Zenmuse Gimbal - Sony NEX-7. (1 min 48 sec)

6.) HDAirStudio InfinityM-P3 3axis $830
750g with antivib and electronics housing
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...858227&page=78
Sample Video:
Test #2 DSLR InfinityM Gimbal and Alexmos Board (6 min 46 sec)

7.) HobbyKing 5N Storm Eye Brushless Gimbal Full Carbon Kit $100
272g w/o motors or electronics
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ini_DSLR_.html
Sample Video:
Storm Eye Brushless gimbal review and flight test (6 min 50 sec)

8.) HobbyKing Ack Pro Brushless Gimbal $179
509g w/ motors

Sample Video and Specs:
Ark Pro Gimbal test video 3 cameras (1 min 6 sec)

BRUSHLESS CONTROLLER OPTIONS

1.) AlexMoss / BaseCam SimpleBGC 16bit 2 and 3 axis (16bit available now and 32bit coming soon)
http://www.basecamelectronics.com/

2.) Phobotic Centerpiece gimbal controller (coming when its ready)
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2049049
This seems very exciting. I've subscribed to the thread.

3.) AlexMoss Clones (tons of them and I don't know the space much)

I am also open to "building your own" provided someone's got a link to a design that has been proven to be capable of smooth video.

So, what about the controller? Alex-Moss 2/3 axis the only one to go with or are all clones pretty much the same?

If you guys can provide me your lessons learned and also links to other 'good' gimbals for the Sony NEX series, I'll try to keep this first post up to date with everything that is learned.

I am in the same boat as you, although I plan on using a Ricoh GR and BMPCC rather than a nex, but they are a similar size.

I have read the DYS/RCTimer L bracket gimbals are not good, so also want a gimbal supported on both sides at the camera mount.

I like the look of the greenhouse technologies gimbals as they offer a bit more scope for different camera's compared to the ARRIS ones. The one you link to in your post is actually in stock at the moment ! But I would prefer the EZ v2 version for my camera choices.

I've also read a great deal on Alexmos controllers and they do seem a pig to get working right, so I am intrigued by the Phobotic controller, some amazing footage on the thread:

Bought this one for use on my H4, but now thinking of trying it on my Y6 - seems to work well on the bench, but I haven't flown it yet.

The DYS gimbal works really well. You will only get vibrations if your gimbal is not tuned properly. L type gimbals work great when tuned properly. The PhotoshipOne Phoenix is L-type and works great.

I actually like the look of this gimbal, good size for my requirements and can go up to a GH3 size camera - 300g - 900g, see post 1158

I've updated my first post with the information you guys provided. Thanks for the help on the search. And, wow, that Phobotic controller looks sexxy!!

Thalios,
Can you find a solid sample video of a NEX 5 size camera on an L gimbal? I've heard these work excellent on the ground, but not so good in the air.

GordonTarling,
I'm actually very interested in the gimbal you posted. I found a sample video (above) that uses this along with 2x$30 motors and AlexMoss and has had excellent results. The price is right and the weight is very good. Can you give me more info on what you've learned about it?

A step up from the 5N Storm gimbal is their 'ACK Pro' Gimbal, also for a Nex size or GH camera. It looks like an improved design but slightly heavier and more expensive:

cjyoyogi,
Great find! I also found a sample video for it and posted it at the top. Are you still going to wait for April for the new HDAirstudio? Its a beautiful design, but >$600 more. It looks like the folks that are developing the phobotic controller are also getting into the gimbal business according to their thread, but nothing to look at yet.

We're not making any complete gimbals, only controllers. We partnered up with some great gimbal manufactures and you could buy complete assemblies from them in a short while.

SamurAchzar,
I stand corrected; thanks. I'm following your thread with much anticipation and I hope your price is not out of my budget! You said its slightly over the cost of the AlexMoss 32bit controller ($340).. may I suggest $341.99?

$3xx. We made a decision very early in this project to go towards the high end of the market in features, hardware and time spent on R&D. We wanted to make a Z15/MoVI competitor, not an Alexmos (or clones of) competitor.
I think that given the capabilities of our controller, we'll be offering a very reasonable deal. I'm sure it'll be clearer when we release the spec, though, and that's going to happen soon.

$600 more and 200g or so heavier.
At this moment I'm liking the look (and price) of the Ack Pro, but no stock.

I can afford to wait until Phobotic's are out, the Ack is back in stock and anything else interesting turns up - as I've yet to buy and build my copter first and this is all part of the build research - but thats another can of worms, octo, x8, hex etc...

Also this is an interesting development:

It's been a while since there was any updates to this thread. Any more information? So far I am liking the GHT one.

I went with option 1 sad to say. Not because I though it was the best, but because it was much cheaper and I found some really good samples on YouTube. You have to use the smaller 19mm lens (Sony SEL16F28) to make it work well.
I received it last week and the BGC that came with it is this one:
http://www.goodluckbuy.com/alexmos-b...ion-board.html
The wiring diagrams I've seen do not work with this board on the pan motor. There are two pan motor hookups and neither work. Either I've got a bum board or there is a secret to making it work right. Trying to get in touch with GoodLuckBuy is a test of frustration.

Wow.. finally maidened the DYS 3 Axis gimbal. Not 'wow' because its perfect, but 'wow' because it took me a long time to get to this point.

I bought this kit from Goodluckbuy: http://www.goodluckbuy.com/dys-brush...otography.html.

It came with a clone Alex Mos that had no documentation and had connections unlike any other Alex Mos board or clone I could find on the Internet. I had to deal with GLB over email and after about 5 times going back and forth over emails for about 2 weeks, I finally got photos of how to wire the board (attached).

In any case, I thought I'd see if I can get this to work with the default 18-55mm lens and spent quite a few hours tuning via a hand mount. I'm using rev 2.40b7 and was able to get the video decent on the ground. The next challenge is to get it perfect. However, even at this point, this gimbal is 100% better than my AG600 brushed gimbal I bought a couple years ago so I'm already happy.

Below is my video shot on a gusty day. Again, not perfect like what you see elsewhere on YouTube, but super happy for a first stab.
