Call for Volunteers - Blue Skies over New Mexico

Gentlemen,
The list of volunteer tasks and stuff we need people to bring is in your email boxes. If you didn't get it, send me an email at ask@rcbuilder.com so I can reply to your current address.

As we've discussed, we active pilots will take on the majority of the work. You'll see from the list that a Blue Skies event is a big deal, with lots of planning and preparation to successfully pull it off.

Please take on more than one task, and get back to me promptly. I want to know everyone's preferred and alternate assignments in our group of pilots, before I attend the club meeting on Tuesday. There I'll work on filling the rest of our contest assignments, especially those that require a non-flying participant.

Best regards,

Aradhana Singh Khalsa

I just got back from Tucson, where I got to fly a couple of hours with PocketRocket and iwokeupwithgills. We had a good time at the SAGE field, flying AULD and 2-minute maxes. If Everest is going to live in Tucson for a while, he is off to a good start. Everest has his Validol working again, and Philip has a new Blaster 2.

Philip and Everest both said they would be attending the BSoNM.

While on the way back, I saw something very interesting while crossing the big playa on I-10, just West of Lordsburg. There were as many as fifteen dust devils visible across the playa, in all stages of development.

Maybe it's time to consider an expedition to Lordsburg.

Yours, Greg

Rain has been predicted for several days now (and my backyard got some of it. Yippee!). The mornings opened overcast and heavy with humidity, but both days, Mark and I have gone out and had a good time.

Surprising lift has been available both days, with conditions changing rapidly, calling for flexibility and thought from first to last. This past afternoon, thermals were choppy, some with incredible, upsetting turbulence even though the wind has seldom been above about 10 mph.

I closed today by fiddling with my transmitter, and then forgetting to re-connect the receiver battery before launch. It is fixable, but darn! Not that I aid "darn!" on the field in real time. The Legend is fixable, though, and should be present and ready for the BSoNM.

Yours, Greg

Greg and I did have some great (but challenging) flying over the last two days!

However.......

This picture shows the result of my flying on Saturday. I ripped the nose off of my Arrow on launch. To be fair to Shaper Dave, the fuse had been damaged and repaired more than a year ago.

Now I'm down to just one plane for BSoNM. Still, I'm sure it's gonna be great!

Mark, oh no! That looks like quite a bad tumble.

Is the wing toast or repairable?

Bad luck the last few weeks on both our ends. But the Concept is back in one piece and will fly again shortly. I'll let you know as soon as your tails show up, I'm watching out for them. Greg said he got his in about 2 weeks and we are coming up on that number, we may have them in time.

I was out at our field in the desert on Saturday, and had changed a number of settings on the plane. So I gave it a few light throws to check trim. Made a couple of adjustments, and then started throwing a little harder. I kept working on the launch settings, and had them to a point where they were pretty close to being optimum. Then I put some effort into the launches. I had my RAM 3 altimeter on the plane, and the second to last launch peaked at 167 feet. That was almost a 100% throw. The next throw was my maximum effort, and the instant it left my fingers, I heard the nose rip off the plane. I looked up to see the nose tethered to the boom/wing demon plane by servo leads, tails fluttering madly (both rudder and elevator pushrods had been snapped in two), and the carcass diving for the earth. The entire flight lasted 2 seconds, and hit an altitude of 63 feet I think -- I'd have to go back and look at the data. The impact in the dirt took care of ensuring that the wing was broken too.

As far as repairing the fuse or wing to be a DLG again -- that's not going to happen. I might repair the fuse and wing into an electric sailplane, or into a sloper.

But more likely, I'll cut the wing just outside of the servos and make a mini out of it, similar to the Blister (mini-Blaster) that you saw back in February in Socorro.

CA is a miracle cure when it comes to DLG's. No crash is irreparable.
