To explain the comment above, the Dirty Birdy was in the back seat of my pickup because my wife and I had just finished a fine day of flying on November 17 (I think) when a Grand Cherokee with (4) 16 year olds pulled across our path and we T-boned them going 40 mph.
Everyone was ok except my wife got 3 broken ribs and my DB received some minor damage. They are both still recovering.
I never knew broken ribs were so bad...no laughing, no coughing, no fun!

I was trying to figure out how much it would take to repair the DB. I finally figured out how much it would cost and I sent an estimate to repair the DB to the kids insurance and they paid last month so I've got to order some new paint and today started constructing a new wing.
The elevator got a small bit chewed out of a corner but I think I can just fix that by forming it out a bit with some epoxy and micro balloons and hand paint a touch up on it.

The other wing could have been flown with the dent but I wasn't confident it wasn't going to change the way it flies. So I was going to strip the paint, fix the dent, and repaint it so I figured why not just make a new wing.

Today I took some foam cores I had laying around and sheeted them with 1/16" contest balsa (no Kevin, I haven't pulled the trigger on 1/32" yet...soon) and added the LE and TE caps. The LE caps aren't as big as they look, they will only be about 1/8"...just found a nice stick to use and it was a bit thicker than needed.

The sweet mess of success!

Think I might try Kevin's method of the LE/TE hinge line...need to find some tooth picks.

I use a router bit to cut the slots and found it was easier to round the blocks than square the slot.

Thanks Ralph

Tim, I'm not familiar with this method. Could you explain in more detail?

Thanks, Jim

I managed to get the wing servo trays in this weekend and mark locations for the ailerons which I think I'm going to make them 18" x 1.5".

Everyday I get more dings on this wing, I need to hurry and glass it!
I bet if a bug flew in the door and hit the wing I'd be filling a hole!

Weight at this point is 6.95 and 6.8

Kevin's method worked out pretty good. Not any easier than the other methods but I feel it worked out better for getting the cap strips the right thickness...nice tip.

I'm getting close to finishing this wing set. I talked to Leo at KlasskoteMO.com and he has the paint so I'm going to get that on the way.

I would like to discuss finishing methods. I usually vacuum the glass on with Mylar which gives me a mirror finish but what do you guys use?

Kevin uses dope or something to seal the wood. I think Matt (MTK) was using Aquanet to seal the wood first. Ideas?

I want to keep the weight down. However I'm at the point of making it too light and too soft so...
