TAFT 11 blade 90mm EDF

Since there was no dedicated thread here we go....
I recently ordered and received the TAFT 11 blade 90mm rotor and 5mm adapter from RCCastle. I did not order the shroud as I'm hoping to fit into existing shrouds that I've collected over the years and if it warrants, exchange with other fans if performance is better.
Has anyone been testing the TAFT 11 blade fans to see what power levels it can handle? Any testing data would be useful. Any fit data for various shrouds would also be welcome.
Just looking at the fan, I think is is well moulded (much better than a 12blade lander unit I bought recently). The blade angles look reasonable and are much thinner than the Changesun 12 blade. The blades do flex a little when pressed which concerns me but perhaps someone has already put some power through one can chime in on strength.

I will post my findings when I get a chance.

Thanks for any input.
Eric

This is really great and cheap edf, I rebuild it little bit and it has really great turbine sound, quiet good performance for such a cheap outrunner motor and on 6s I am going to push my scratchbuild delta jet on it...pictures here: http://www.rcportal.sk/zachranene-dmychadlo-g2362

TAFT 90mm 11 blade EDF fan measurements.

The TAFT 90mm 11 blade fan is 91.5mm in diameter and has a collet adapter that is 10mm in diameter made for 5mm motor shafts. The rotor diameter is about 3 to 4.5mm larger than the Haoye 7 blade and Changesun 12 blade 90mm fans (measured at 87 to 88.5mm). The TAFT also is a tall fan meaning a deep intake portion is needed in the shroud. I'm planning to test in the Changesun shroud which is plenty deep but the blades have to be shortened to fit. The typical shrouds for Flyfly Haoye 90mm fans are not deep enough to cover the TAFT blades and part of the fan will stick out (not suitable). I do not have the actual TAFT shroud for comparison but it must be a slightly larger outside diameter than most 90mm fans.
After shortening the blades to fit my CS shroud, I will post my findings.

Corrected measurement of CS diameter (it is 87mm)

TAFT 11 blade fan with Changesun 1600kv outrunner motor data

Running the shortened TAFT 11 blade fan in the Changesun shroud with the Changesun 1600kv outrunner gives identical figures to the Changesun impeller.
I added a intake lip to the shroud for bench tests to show figures closer to installed.

Using Gens Ace 5500mah 25C 6S batteries

2000watts 89amps peak
1750watts 82amps settled

What I don't know is the measured thrust. With my CS setups with similar motors it is about 2.2kg installed thrust. I will have to install the TAFT to see what the verdict is. I'm thinking that it may have an edge over the CS 12 blade in thrust but that information will have to wait till my F86 is finished. I will post the results then.

One thing about the TAFT collet adapter is that it is difficult to tighten the way it comes out of the box. I will cut a slot in the end of the adapter so that a large flat blade screwdriver can be used to help tighten the nut. I also glued a sandpaper washer to the back stop of the adapter to help prevent the fan from twisting out of position.

The TAFT Viper comes with this fan and a 1450kv outrunner but I think the Changesun 1600kv motor from X-flight would provide better performance and be reliable as my motor temperatures never exceeded 110F.

After cutting the adapter end with a slot, the it was much easier to tighten the collett adapter securely. The fan was clocked as was the spinner for dynamic balance. Some additional weight was added inside the spinner with CA. It runs well and the total weight is 352g with the CS shroud cut down to the length I wanted.

A thrust/watt test I did some time ago with a Dr Mad Max 1600kv inrunner motor...

Taft Viper 90mm Fan with Dr Mad Thrust 1620kv motor Thrust Test (0 min 0 sec)

Taft Viper Jet 90mm 11-Blade Fan
Hobby King Dr Mad Thrust 1620kv 2400watt 90mm EDF Inrunner 6s version (36mm)
Dr Mad Thrust 36mm Heat Sink.
Turnigy Nanotech 6S 5000mah 65-130c battery

Thrust on a fully charged battery is not Captured on Video.
It's 3.2Kg for around 2500Watts (110Amps@22.6V).

Thrust starts at around 3Kg for around 2200watts (100amps@22V).
Slowly drops to 2.75Kg for 2037Watts (97A@21V).

Thanks Anlucas
I haven't built a test stand that measures thrust as I just measure it once installed in the plane. Pretty crude, but give me an idea of what I can expect in the air (based on my other measurements).
Cheers Eric

Not sure the 1600kv rating for the Chanesun motor is accurate, but the power levels should be fine for my application.

I'm running a Taft in my low power Jetster and am happy with it.
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2226971

On 4 s I get around 800 watts and flys a 3 - 4 pound airplane quite nicely.

I did spend some quality time with my balancer before install but for the price of the fan I'm not complaining. I'll be picking up a pair for my Nitroplanes HondaJet.

I love this fan for sound and performance on a budget. I run 1650kv CP inrunners with it and pull around 88amps, but I'm looking for a great 8s inrunner to try with it...

Any Taft 11b 8s numbers out there?

Interesting thread,
Thank you share with us
I want to ask
When you assemble the fan
Where do you put Loctite
And what Loctite do you recommend to use?

I use medium strength on the motor mount screws and the spinner screw.
