Rib tapes at CVS?

I was at the local pharmacy last evening (I go there MORE than the LHS at my age!) looking for an appropriate "rub", when I noticed CVS house brand 1" cloth medical tape. Now, my current project is 50% scale and could need 2" rib tapes in scale. The wheels were turning, pain temporarily forgotton ,so I veered from my original target and examined the packaged rolls closer. It appears to be some sort of synthetic weave with a pinked edge that has approx pitch of 1/16" . A near exact half scale version of 2" rib tape with 1/8 " pitch pinked edges. I'll be doing some experiments over Koveral. Anyone else use use it?

I have seen women's hair styling tape, which is 1/2" wide w pinked edges for 1/4 scale rib tapes. It just struck me (what's another pain?) that at 1/4 scale one needs to rpresent a 4" tape at LE. That 1" tape will definitly prove usefull!

I've been using the hair styling tapes in lieu of cutting my own, with pinking shears.
Styling tape is a bit thicker than scale, but what the hey, something's better than nothing,eh?
I'm not a scale 'nut',so larger pinked edges are no biggie, nor is the thicker tape.

Again-if it's easy,we'll do it!....I hadn't seen the wider stuff-I need to go back !

Thanks for the information.

Well earl,

Pinked tape usually comes in either 1/8" pitch or 1/4" pitch. That's the size and spacing of the picked edge points. So that larger pitch of the hairstyling tape may not be so bad after all!

I usually forego the scale size edges, since on 1/4 scale models, the pinked edge all but disappears, under paint and from a short distance away(to spectators)....

Actual scale gives way to "scale-like",when I want to allow the tapes and stitching to be seen from a short distance.

I usually offend scale buffs, but the details do show up better.

Wasn't that the go to strategy when "stand -off scale" became popular? Large scale model with slightly exagerated detail to be appreciated from outside the !5' radius judging circle?

I stand guilty as charged-lol.

That WAS the reasoning, because at fifteen feet, details that required a lot of effort couldn't be seen easily.

I supplied a lot of fodder for the guys who are always looking for something "wrong" with a model. If some of those rivets had been full-scale they'd have been a 1/2" in diameter, and 1/8" high !

But we live and learn, and revert back to realism as best we can.

Funny how that seemed to morph into Sport Scale, which IIRC was also about the time AMA Precision Scale died. Have not attended a scale contest in quite some time, but it seems to me that the overall realism of sport Scale R/C was on the rise, then.

AMA Precsion scale is dead in FF and CL as well, it would seem. Too bad. Flying Aces rules seem to dominate FF scale now, but they do not encourage realism at the expence of flight time, which IMHO results largely in recognizable characatures, but with duration model proportions and performance.

One of my pet beefs with AMA Scale was ones 's model was judged more on how well one conformed to provided documentation, even if it was wrong.

I guess you can't make everyone happy, especailly a nut case like me!

For th emost part, I'm more interested in proper shapes than I am in detail. Besides, detail on an improper shape simply can't be accurate.

I gave up on "SCALE" scale, when I visited several airports, armed with large sheets of paper,to actually trace stab and rudder outlines on J-3 Cubs.
I carefully laid flight surfaces off restorations onto the paper, traced them, then had 'em digitally reduced to 1/3 size...Three different air craft over the years, three different outlines.!
You can't build a scale model.......you can build scale-like.......

I build "representations" now,and the only one who's allowed to judge it is me..I won't let the owner of the Mid-Wing Special near the model, because he judges it before I sand it to shape!-SHUT UP! -enjoy what I've done or look the other way!
