John Craig II sternwheel ferry

This will be the start of a new build thread for a sternwheel ferry tender. I was able to get a full set of CAD drawings from the naval architect and have most of the materials on hand. I need a short break from the Pioneer Troller model. jerryj98501

Nice work on the hull. Great to see a number of new builds being posted.

How cool is that! Interesting backstory to go along with the build.

Update on the build. Looking at the profile of the hull, I realized that the lower transom of the hull was incorrect. I cut a new profile pattern and removed the old stern bottom and cut to the new profile and replaced that part of the bottom ply to the new contour. Now, on with the build. Hermill thank you for the above reference. I have several pictures of him at the ferry site. Sounds like a great retirement part time job.; jerryj98501

This looks like it might have been designed by naval architect Bill Preston, of Gulf Breeze FL. Neat looking little boat!

You are right John, I had seen the picture in a professional magazine that covered his being recognized for forty years of naval architectural work. I contacted him and asked him about building a RC model and he was very receptive to my endeavor. When he found out that I had taught CAD in my teaching career, he said he would send me the CAD drawings to work from. From those I printed them out to 3/4"-1'-0" scale and those are what I am working from. It was very interesting talking to him about his other designs also. Great to hear from you and I still have my aerial shot of UW stadium you gave me on a trip while you were working for the navy. jerryj98501

Worked some more on the build this morning. Cutout the deck, added a vertical wall for stopping water from entering the hull. Worked on corner fairing and fairing the rudders. Cut the back splash panel and installed it, and the wheel girders, to the transom of the hull. Started to fair other parts of the hull. jerryj98501
