Flying off Grass ?

Some of us are not so lucky as to have a paved strip.. Does anyone have any experiance our carnal knowledge about EDF's flying off Grass Strips? I want to get the Taft 90mm Viper.. But worry about being able to fly it ones I get it ?

It seems most planes have enought power, but they lack in wheeel size.

On our grass field, my rule of thumb is, no less then 2.25 ", and if possible 2.5". Total AUW also figures into it. I have read many threads where the owner modified the wheel wells to accept larger wheels just for grass.

How smooth your field is also plays into it. Grass length??

If it's as flat and smooth as a putting green I wouldn't worry!

But if you have enought power, 2" might work.


In this post is Tumblers xXx, If I recall correctly, he had used 2.25" wheels. But his power is an XtremeRC 127mm fan.

All my EDF's fly off grass

As cooler said , wheel size and grass height are 2 top considerations.

Its really amazing what grass height does to the takeoff run. I had larger planes that would take the whole runway with normal height grass. Our club starting cutting it shorter and my planes would take less than 1/2 the runway. The difference was huge.

You probably want a plane with flaps, so you can get that little extra lift on takeoff.

I also find that I need to have more power in my planes then someone with the same plane flying off pavement, so more cells.

I have flown the E-Flite Super Airliner from grass, with the original wheels!
At first it would only taxi around, but after I set the ailerons ~30dgr down as flapperon, it would take off without a problem.

Have the mains near the cg and a lot of elevator so you can rotate. Be quick to get off the elevator soon as it rotates. The video is of a Falcon 120 that weighs 19 lbs. and has about a one to one thrust to weight ratio. It also has the stabilizer "inverted" from the stock position. The stabilizer provides a down force so if a cambered stabilizer is used, it should have the curved side down. I think the wheels are 2.25 dia. and you can see they are buried in the grass. I also used full flaps.

This video is of a ready2fly DH-112 Venom 90mm foamy powered buy a turbine flying from grass pretty impressive! The Venom has 2-1/2" main wheels and 2-1/4" nose I have the Vemon kit I,m working on now will fly from grass as well.
