Next SBSS Meeting Entertainment

Hi Gang,

We have two subjects that I think you might like. Bob L. will be talking about the strategies on when and how to add ballast. I could have used this at today's DLG contest at Newark Jr. High. The wind kept creeping up, and I kept complaining about my plane's lack of penetration and unpredictable flying behavior. With a bit of luck, Aaron will join his dad and tell us how it is really done ;-)

Then once they warm up the crowd, Bob B. will talk about covering technics using film coverings. Dick D. may also help as well. If you have seen any planes build by these two guys, you will know why we asked them to teach us their secrets.

See You Next Wednesday. 7:30ish at the Saratoga Fire Station,

Kyle

Speaker for Wednesday Nights SBSS Meeting - Bob Parks Human Powered Flight and Other

July 11, 2012 Saratoga Fire Station 7:30pm (Business Meeting at 6:30pm).

At this weekend's Tomcats Air Show you may have seen Bob Parks fly his own rocket glider design, the Aerotech Phoenix. Several years ago Bob Park gave one of SBSS's most interesting talks on his design work on the Daedalus Human Powered Flight project. His aircraft broke many human power flight records and made the mythical human powered flight from Crete to Santorini a reality in 1988. We are very fortunate to get an updated talk on this topic that he recently at Stanford. He may also give us updates on his other past projects including consulting with NASA and his work on unmanned aircraft. Our business meeting will begin at 6:30pm, July 11th at the Saratoga Fire Station, but Bob's talk will start sometime after 7:30pm.

See you there, Kyle

SBSS Meeting November 14th - Sailplane Telemetry for Competition

Come hear Francesco speak on how data logging, data analysis, and telemetry may be used to optimize the performance of a model for competition purposes. He will show the equipment and techniques he has developed for his F3J models, with special focus on the optimization of the launch phase.

Randy, our club secretary spotted this expert in our midst as he was installing a telemetry unit on Bob M's sailplane (our resident world competitor). This unit captures and records information from launch to landing. This helps Bob to adjust his radio and sailplane to get the best performance and handling from his sailplane.

Kyle will be in China so Randy's job is to host and record this memorable program for him, but Randy needs to make sure that Francesco covers how to get his radio to make those obnoxious beeps when he blindly stumbles into a thermal.

Our meeting starts at 6:30pm on Wednesday, November 14th, 2012 at the Saratoga Fire Station. Visitors are welcome and even motor heads may learn a trick or two.

List of Videos (Spoiler Alert)

SEAN'S VIDEOS - he has a couple of videos from our own club's activities going back 15-20 years ago. One is of the annual build and fly indoor contest
Seanand the other is of the club's night flight fun fly. Combined time for both is less that 10 minutes.

DLG AEROBATICS - Best F3K video:
F3K glider aerobatics (3 min 20 sec)

watch in HD, full screen with sound up.

LEGO MAN IN SPACE
Lego Man in Space (1 min 32 sec)
1.30 space flight, I think in weather balloon with time lapse photography.

MARK DRELA'S HUMAN POWERED HYDROFOIL
Décavitator : le record du monde de Mark Drela (0 min 15 sec)
0:30, after all, its just a plane that flies underwater.

WINGSUIT BASE JUMPING - These guys wearing squirrel suits make slope soaring look like snail farming for the highly intelligent
Wingsuit Base Jumping (3 min 45 sec)
3.45 min.

NICK FROM EBAY DLG Opus f3k Launch
Opus f3k Launch Video World Championships (3 min 42 sec)
3:27, Air Force guy who is one of the highest throwers in the world. I guess the guy who builds the Opus wanted to see if Nick could break it...he did.

PHILIPPE FLYING AT CASTLE PEAK
Fox@CastlePeak (1 min 54 sec)
1:30 min, Flying a little Fox from Windrider (HK). Never thought one can have that much fun with a foamy. Recommended if you're on the market for a small cheap good looking sloper.

MARK DRELA'S TED TALK 10/24/12 ON JET EFFICENCY http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...E8wphVf76sKaag 15:00 optional if time allows, interesting to view on your own.

Saratoga Fire Station, 14380 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga, CA, the one in Saratoga!

In the first of our Skype call series, we will be speaking with David Klein (if the Internet Gods are kind to us). David competes in virtually every form of sailplane contest flying; discuss launch, thermal, speed, and slope. He also is an active member of the Torrey Pines Gulls, the World famous radio control glider soaring club located in Southern California. David's day job is an Aerospace Engineer, specializing in the design and analysis of lightweight composite structures.

David is a qualified pilot who may be selected to compete in F3K (DLG) as well in September of this year, and has been on the F3B for the USA team at the world championships in 2011 and soon 2013. Among the topics he may discuss are:

F3B (Winch Launch Thermal/Speed/Distance Contest)
What is like competing at a world level
Strategies for plane selection, launch, tasks, landing
How to up our game in our non-competitve flying or local contests.
How can we help the F3B USA team
Contrast F3B to F3K

F3K (Discuss Launch Glider Contest)
Launch Performance and tips
Current crop of state of the art gliders
Thoughts on making a DLG plane for neophytes
Contest Strategy
Contest training

COMPOSITES
Trends in glider composites
Trends in glider design
