Help!
70mm setup on a Sniper

Greetings fellow fan flyers! My background is 200mph+ nitro fans, but I'm new to EDFs. My Electrifly Evader and E-flite F86 are fast with their recommended setups but my irrational need for higher airspeeds drove me to build an HET Sniper 70mm (clipped wing). I beefed it up with two CF spars, glassed wing and tail with all flight surface controls inside the wing and fuselage. The airframe is as slippery as it's gonna get. Months of net surfing and fan calcs along with airframe space/weight/balance considerations has yielded only the installation of a Wemotec Fan Pro, CC IceLite 100A ESC and no more than a single 4S 3700 mAH 35C LiPo up front between the converging intake ducts. So what motor to use? Neu 1112-1Y? ARC 28-58-1? Mega 16-something? I would greatly appreciate any real world experienced suggestions or endorsements you may have. Thanks...

Hi there
I have had both a composite version and a the one you have with the balsa wings.
I have had it with a HET 2W-20 on 4S 3700mah.That was fast and fun Untill the wings folded.(balsa Wings)
I then went with a composite Sniper. I put in a LS1400 with 5S 3200.(3+2)
I could not get this off the ground. In my opinion too heavy.
I ended up flying this on 3S.I got about 4 mins flying with throttle management. Not fast but fun.
Cheers
Steve.
PS.When you timer tells you to land,"LAND".Otherwise you could loose total power and wreck the plane.
Dont ask me how I know that:

70mm setup on a Sniper

Thanks Steve, you were spot on with the timer at 4 minutes and throttle management. I use that regime with the Evader( 4S 2600mAH 35C) and the E-flite F86( 4S 3300mAH 30C). All-composite airframes weigh more than glassed balsa does. With double CF spars my Sniper wing held 50 lbs of sandbags at a 15 degree deflection- that's 16Gs! And the aircraft AUW is still under 1200 grams. Now if I could just get 1300 grams of thrust on 4S...!

Hi
you could rig up with a Typhoon 1W-30 it will give you at least 1500 grams of thrust on 4S

My original Sniper was on a 3s setup and flew great.Got another one this summer and went with a 5s setup, just too heavy.Broke the wing on landing in the grass.Being a belly flopper, too much weight makes almost impossible to land without damage.

The ARC 28-47-1 is worth a look .... should be good for 1200+ watts on a decent 4 cell lipo (depending on your ducting) in the HET 6904. It'll run right about 95A maybe some small bursts over 100 with a fresh pack, so with your 100A ESC, you'll wanna use short bursts of full throttle.

This setup which is almost identical to yours gets him to 150:
HET Super Sniper with ARC 28-47-1 (2 min 20 sec)

Oh, and the motor will run on 5s as well (if you keep it cool, maybe even more??) but with a very high amp load. Something to consider if you wanted to brave the whole 5s issue.

Good call GP, that and don't forget the mpi heat sink!
The 1W-30 proly be good for a 4s light setup but needs a 125esc and some grunt to push it.
My experience with both motors is the 1W has a bit more punch, limited to 4s only, more power consumed.
The 28-47 seems to be the high power all around motor on 4s, a bit easier on batts. Depending on your needs both are great motors.

70mm setup on a Sniper

ApexAero's point about the ARC 28-47-1's being a little easier on bats is well taken. 150mph on a stock- looking Sniper is encouraging. I rolled up a Mylar efflux tube with a constant taper down to 50mm, but those Wemo glass tubes look interesting..that's prolly another thread. Is the "MPI heatsink" the finned type or a machined aft nacelle?

Finned, I trim it to fit with a band saw and clean up the edges with a wire wheel. Be sure to use thermal paste.

70mm setup on a Sniper

Got it, stopped by and picked up some 7 carat diamond thermal paste- 4.5 times the heat conductivity of silver and no electrical conductivity. Six bucks for what looks like 2-3 28mm heatsinks worth in the tube. OK, let's see what comes out with the ARC 28-47-1/Wemo MiniFanPro(5 blade)/100A ESC/4S 3700mAH 35C. Thanks everyone...will check back with speedtrap results.

Depending on your flying style, I'd really look into a CC 125A ESC to give you more headroom than the 100A ESC you mentioned.

Here's agraph from a 1W-30 on a lander 68mm(70mm class) on a CCIce 100 finned, 4s. Pulls almost 5lbs bell lip open exhaust. A Wemo would do better. You can see the full throttle, half, full and cool down over 90sec run. Esc in airstream, a finned Ice can sustain higher amps when well cooled

Fan flyer,
Our Efflux pro EDF with a Minifan pro rotor will get you 5.5lbs thrust with the ARC 28-58-1 on 6s. (You may be able to push the Mega 16-40-1 futher on 7s with throttle management.)
Our ALL ALLOY 70 mm Will get you 6.48 lbs thrust with the same motors.
If you don't mind the high amps of a 4200 kv motor, our new "Cool 42" (4200 kv) will run very cool on 4s-5s.
Just a few additional possibilites.

Have fun - fly faaast!
Gary
