Carbon vs kevlar sock
Hi guys i have a question i need answered so i can place order
I have been bagging wing spars i make using carbon sock , how ever
Im wondering if i can do it with kevlar and save some money(bonus!)
What will i loose and what will be gained from using kevlar rather than carbon?
Wings spars are for two meter ds gliders weighing 2-3kg
Spars are carbon caps with pine shear webbing, then sock over the outside for burst strenght
I've not heard of using Kevlar sock on the spar, (normal TD or F3B, J gliders) but definitely Kevlar tow, or string as a spiral wrap. It has the qualities of holding the carbon spar caps onto the spars, (as its qualities are good in tension), when under bending loads. That prevents the cf spars from sliding / shearing, which quickly leads to spar failure under hi-g forces.
The kevlar sock should work well, but might be a bit of overkill if you are concerned
about weight..( but for ds'ing.. probably a good idea considering the bending loads)
Joe Manor, the DS'ing guru might have some insight into that..
$0:02 Cdn worth
