Idea
Yard sign wing

It's election time in our town and I have 100 unused 18x24inch coro signs in my garage. They really need to find a better use than pimping politicians, and what better use is than in a slope wing?

I'm thinking a 36" span plank should work, and could fit on one sign.

I'll post sketches as they come but would appreciate any suggestions!

There's a forum here called "S.P.A.D." or Simple Plastic Airplane Designs.

The material often used is the corrugated plastic sign stuff. I call it "Coroplast" but other names exist, "Correx" is one.

The Slope forum has some threads about making PSS gliders from the stuff. Many good hints and tips.

Dayhead: I'm not finding the S.P.A.D. forum or thread. Got a link?
The South African build videos are excellent... I'm on my way.

Thanks for the leads.

Don't need no grass cut. The boys in South Africa have it down.

So far, this will be a 48" span swept wing, like a combat wing but higher aspect ratio. The trick will be designing the airfoil and getting the right twist built in.

You may be able to do a fold over style wing and then sort of "warp" it to get a shear at the rear joint then secure it.

The other option is make the elevons wider at the tip than at the root and with the up trim they need the tip airfoil will then have the washout and different tip airfoil you want.

It also sounds like you have more than enough to experiment with different ideas....

Here's a link to the SPAD forum here on RCG...

And here is a thread of 175 pages and counting showing how to make aeronautics out of yard signs, from the slopeheads:

These are all made from 2 mm corro. Yard signs arey4 mm. The thick stuff won't bend over a radius less than the length of a football field so I'll find other uses for the signs. Maybe military - industrial?

Have you tried heating the coro in your oven? Polystyrene gets soft at a fairly low temperature. 170 F is where it starts to get gooy so something well below that should let you bend it around some more useful radius.

I was just thinking about heat! Great minds...

I'll check on temps for forming polystyrine and see whether a heat-shrink iron could soften it enough to shape the sheets over a simple form.

That 4 mm stuff is so strong that the spar strength would be minimal.
