Best "bang for the buck" speed plane?
I'm looking for the best dollar to speed ratio I can find for a speed build. I'm hoping to get a plane over 100 mph (the faster the better) for under $200 (airframe, motor, esc, & servos; have plenty of RXs and batteries). It would be nice to have something I can hand launch, but If I have to build a bungee launcher I will. Any suggestions?

Flitetest designed a plane that went 100mph for less than $100. It was actually around $55 without a transmitter. Here's the link to the plans

It might come in a little above your price range but we clocked my upgraded Wildcat today at 200 kph (that's 120 mph). It's the standard body kit with one of the new OS motors (1200 Kv) and a Thunderbird 56 esc.

motor- Sapac Mb-1=40.00 ESC-Hobby Wing 80 amp=55.00 servo-2- Power HD-1160A =10.00 Total=$204.00 plus it looks real good Keep em flying raido56/ Herb My buddy got a speed of 129.6 mph on his phone with the RC Speedo app. After checking the video I dont think he had the temp set on his phone. I took the sound from 48 to 54 sec's of the video and ran it on the PC verison of RC Speedo with the temp of 89 that day and got 139.7 mph

Try one of the many 36-48" flying wings. They wouldn't be hard to get over 100mph with a 4S setup from Hobby King.
My Wild Wing goes high 80's low 90's on a $15 3S battery and about $90 into the motor and ESC. Coupled with the $40 I paid for the wing and i'm only into it $145, plus about $9 for servos and a receiver. If I picked another motor/ESC combo I'd push it into the 100mph range easily. |

I just ordered the mini midget mustang from Planeadrenaline. Hard to beat for the price. I didn't want another wing, pusher etc but a conventional plane shape plus it's balsa.
I also have the Delta 3/C from Screaming Foam. It's a fun plane and the JustGoFly motor is bullet proof. http://screamingfoam.com/index.shtml |
