Geared S400 Guru's
I currently fly a S400 w/Gunther 125x110 prop.
This set-up works great w/6 cells. My winter
project includes a S400 thats geared 3/1. The
info generated here leans toward using a 9x6
APC slow flyer prop. Total weight will be 19 oz.
WS 60" Area 360 in.sq. Is this prop going to
pull too much current & shorten my motor life?
Any other prop recommendations (folding preferred)
Or should I just stay with DD and the Gunther?
I normally climb/glide w/the occasainal loop.
Who all makes a 9x6 folder for the S400? What
are you guys using that works good? Thanks to
the faithful E-Zoners

Sounds like you are building an old timer. I fly a geared 6v 400 on various ratios from 2:5/1 to 3:5/1 using a 9x6 and sometimes a 10x7. The 9x6 apc eprop with 2:5/1 provides the best flights with my sureflite cub, usually 10 minute flights on 7 cells. The packs are warm but not hot and the motor is barely warm after flight. My cub weighs 21 oz and has a 42 inch span, fairly draggy airframe but glides reasonably well. Hope this helps.

I agree with sb1, but I think technically, you could squeeze out more duration with the 7.2v, albeit with less "punch." Personally, I use the 6v. I like the grauppner "cam" folders (http://www.hobby-lobby.com/camfold.htm) and the 9x5 @ 2.5 gearing, or the 10x8 @ 3-3.5 ratio. Nice spinner too.
Don't worry about current unless the batteries are coming off hot. At 19oz, the prop will unload a bit on the climb. As to life, the 7.2v would last 50+ runs for sure, the 6v maybe less than 50. All strictly in my opinion, of course.
